Steve, having read only your comment, may I point out something to consider regarding Mt 12:12? I think the point Jesus was making was that, in taking the sheep out of the pit on the sabbath, the person does not break the sabbath law - maybe the letter of the law but not the spirit (that for which the law is intended) -because it is lawful to do what is good on the sabbath. Jesus was saying, "You'd break the sabbath in order to save an animal; why condemn me for breaking the sabbath in order to heal the sick?" Jesus did break or allow the law to be broken. Jesus even condoned David's breaking the law by eating food that was for only the priests. It just may be that the one who lies in order to preserve another's life, although breaking the law with respect to the letter, is nevertheless, not breaking the law with respect to the spirit, that is, it's intention. The "evil" of the lie is meant to bring out a good, that is, the saving of a life. Now, I'm not saying that the end justifies the means, at least, not in general or "let us do 'evil' that good may come of it"; but there are some cases where this proverb may apply. I realize this is a sticky situation to be put in but, for me, if my lie would save one's life, I'll either omit the information or, if pressed, I don't think I'll have any qualms in lying. In general, I agree with you. However, not absolutely everything is "black and white" (as much as we'd like it to be). Just something to think about. |

Dear Looking, You say: Jesus did break ... the law by eating food that was for only the priests. No, Jesus did not break the law (Mat 12:5). Yes, the consecrated bread was for the priest alone but Jesus is the High Priest (see Hebrew ch 3-5), He is the Lord of Sabbath (Mat 12:8). Shalom Azure |

Azure, please note: I said, "Jesus even condoned David's breaking the law by eating food that was for only the priests." David broke the law by eating the priest's bread, is what I said; Jesus only condoned it. Besides, there is no place in the NT where Jesus is eating bread for the priest's alone.

As God's anointed, doesn't that mean David was a priest; I would say he broke no law by eating the bread.

Shalom, good morning John No, David was not a priest, those were the Levites, and the higher up priests (for lack of a better term), I believe, were of Aaron's lineage. Messiah was of the seed of David, of the tribe of Judah 1 Chron. 2:3-15. Be blessed Cheri |

Yes dear sister, I understand how that works, thank you. But, (there's that word) and I hope this isn't too much of a stretch for you, but, I was not referring to a literal priest in the Levitecal sense, obviously he was not a Levite, (sorry I wasn't more clear on that) but, in a spiritual sense, such as in 1 peter 2:9, wherein as believers, we are ALL a royal priesthood, David, was a believer. So that eating the show-bread was just a tradition with the legalistic Levite's, and not something that I believe God really cared about, so that when Jesus mentioned it to the pharisees, He was reflecting that sentiment. (i.e. the Pharisees only believed/thought it was lawbreaking, they are the ones that made that up anyway) Jesus was telling them otherwise; after all, He is the Lord of the Sabbath, and, therefor, more then able to explain what the significance of the Sabbath really is. He is rest itself, and in Him is found rest for believers, He is our peace He is our rest, making Him the Sabbath itself. But I digress, we were talking about, is it ok to lie, weren't we.... or should I say, does the "Bible" say, it's ok to lie? I don't think it does, by the way. :-) Shalom and God bless John |
