Hi Tim, "Cessationism" always comes under attack by those that reside in the camp of "continuationism". I reside in the understanding of the former and I think the charismatic gifts ceased along with the gift of apostleship. 1 Cor. 13:8-10 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. The way I see it, it would be a very mute point if, “that which is perfect” were referring to Christ and His return. On top of that, the word perfect, in the Koine Greek, is in the nominative case, neuter gender, singular of TELEION and if it were a reference to Christ it would be in the masculine gender. The written Word of God on the other hand, fits being in the neuter gender and it fits perfectly as the “completed” Cannon of Scripture after John finished Revelation. When John died, no more apostles and no more need for certain gifts; i.e. we have God’s complete book for mankind, the Bible in it’s entirety. Let just agree to disagree, as it were, CDBJ |
