Hi Tim, An interesting related question indeed! Rom 11:25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; Rom 11:26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." Rom 11:27 "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS." Logically speaking, if the Israel of vs. 26 were Spiritual Israel, it already would be saved. Vs. 25 seems to be contrasting Gentiles and Israel according to their ethnic identities. This portion of Scripture speaks of salvation as interchangable with being a branch of the tree. As the Gentiles are saved, they are grafted into the tree. Those of Israel who are saved are in the tree, and those who will be saved will be grafted into their natural tree. The unsaved of Israel have been cut off from the tree. This seems further borne out in 26b, as God promises to "remove the ungodliness of Jacob", using the name for worldly, pre-"ruled by God" Israel. So I think that Rom. 11:26 is refering to national Israel, and God's promise to save them all. What do you think? Love in Christ, Mark |

Greetings Mark! I can certainly see a case for either view. If it is not a reference to the nation of Israel, then Paul would be saying (throughout 9-11) something like: "All Israel will be saved, but not all those who are part of the nation of Israel will be saved." This would make sense in light of Paul's argument throughout 1-11. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
