Bible Note: Greetings Mark! There certainly does seem to be a lot of misunderstanding in America about the relationship between Israel and the Church. I would agree with you in not holding to a replacement theology. Scripture is quite clear on the following points. 1) God has not rejected His people, Israel. Rom. 11 makes it quite clear that God has not rejected the people of Israel. 2) The 'Israel of God' is a made up of those who believe, not those who are physically descended from Abraham. Rom. 9 makes this perfectly clear. Being a descendent of Abraham in the flesh does not make one a member of the Israel of God. Romans 9:6-8 It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. (7) Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."[2] (8) In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring. 3) Gentiles have not replaced Israel, but have been added to Israel through faith. Romans 9:23-33, as well as Romans 11, make it clear that Gentiles are not part of Israel. So, my understanding is that the Church has not replaced Israel – the Church is now part of Israel.
