Norrie, you might suggest to your friend that she run a tally (using an exhaustive concordance) of the number of Jesus' references to both hell and to heaven in the New Testament. (There are more of hell than of heaven, by the way.) You might also suggest that she read all the New Testament verses (in context) that speak of hell, and ask her to mark those passages that even remotely suggest that hell is merely a place of sojourn for those awaiting "refinement" -- whatever that is. My considered opinion is that Christians would be better off to read and study Scripture and keep their paws off the computer keyboard that leads them to the never-ending stream of religious nuts that lurk in cyberspace. By and large these false teachers do for the spirit what sawdust does for a car's transmission. Sawdust soothes and quietens a transmission for a brief period before destroying it. --Hank

Hank, You stated what I have heard many preachers proclaim, even some books I have read - "you might suggest to your friend that she run a tally (using an exhaustive concordance) of the number of Jesus' references to both hell and to heaven in the New Testament. (There are more of hell than of heaven, by the way.)" It's where do the preachers and authors get their information that I don't understand. Don't get me wrong, Hank. I AM NOT SAYING everyone will be saved and somehow delievered from the flames of hell. But according to Strongs Concordance - Jesus talked a lot more about heaven than He talked about hell. Hell is only mentioned a total of 15 times in the Gospels and only 8 times more elsewhere in the New Testament. Heaven is mentioned 130 times in the Gospels and about 108 other times elsewhere. This is just to "keep the records" straight. Keep up the good work. :) I appreciate you. Tom P.S. If I have neglected some detail about this subject that condradicts my conclusion - I am very open to being corrected. |

Tom, thanks for your response and your kind words. Please re-read my post to Norrie. I didn't say that more references are made to hell than to heaven in the entire corpus of the New Testament canon, nor even in the Gospels themselves. What I said was that Jesus Himself (i.e.,in His own words) referred to hell (and its synonyms) more times than He did to heaven. Please get back with me after you have made the count so that you can confirm or refute my statement by actual count. Thanks again, Tom, for your correspondence. --Hank
