When Christ asked his decuples who they thought he was, Peter gave the right answer and that, according to Christ, brought Peter to the place of blessedness because he was a believer at that point; nothing more and nothing less. Matthew 16:15-18 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Faith in the fact of just who Jesus is, God’s Messiah is what brings one into the blessedness of salvation and as a result their believing this fact places them into the body of Christ, i.e. the church. Don’t get salvation mixed up with discipleship. The topic of discussion in James was in regards to there being only one God not the fact of who Jesus is as the Messiah. Could you please point out in the Bible where it says, as you imply: “when one is willing to surrender to Christ as Lord and Saviour”, thou shalt be saved? CDBJ |

Dear CDBJ: The relationship between faith and works: Scripture repeatedly affirms that salvation is the free gift of God appropriated through faith (Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 3:28). No individual merits salvation by fulfillment of God’s law (Rom. 3:20). Saving faith is, however, obedient faith (Rom. 1:5; 16:26; 1 Pet. 1:2). We are saved for good works (Eph. 2:10). Faith that does not result in acts of Christian love is not salvific but demonic (Jas. 2:14-26, especially v. 19). – Chris Church, Holman Bible Dictionary Outside the Gospels faith is related to the keynote concepts of the Christian message: the state of salvation (Eph. 2:8-9), sanctification (Acts 26:18), purification (Acts 15:9), justification or imputed righteousness (Rom. 4:5; 5:1; Gal. 3:24), adoption as children of God (Gal. 3:26). Each of these comes by faith. As in the Gospels, faith is an attitude toward and relationship with God mediated by Christ Jesus. It is surrender to God’s gift of righteousness in Christ rather than seeking to achieve righteousness alone. William L.
