Hi Cheri, I don't argue for or against certain gifts at this point. My understanding has changed because of arguments given which go beyond scripture to validate the teachings. My position is, I'm not sure :-) So I continue to look at the scriptures and the arguments laid out by mankind for their teachings to see if they line up with scripture. For me, once we began to leave the doctrine of sola Scriptura I lose trust in the teaching. You said "There are many circumstances today that don't seem to be addressed in the Bible as fully (or at all) and they need to be." Humm... so Cheri or Steve or Joe etc... has the ability and knowledge and authority to determine what needs to be in the word of God? If this is your reasoning Cheri then it has no scriptural proof or foundation to establish the proper understanding of the passage in question nor activity of the gifts in the church today. Can you see that? There is nothing that needs to be explained today that God did not explain in His word. Sorry but that is assuming mankind knows what needs to be or should have been explained or that there is something that is needed that God didn't provide to us. Our questions and/or inability to understand is not the determining factor of what is or is not in the word of God. We have the RC Church, JW's, Mormons, etc... and even the straw man arguments from mainstream protestant churches that find themselves in error today because they go outside of God's word and/or think that God's word is not sufficient as He deemed it so. These are the results of man deciding what is or should be the truth and look how far off the mark they get. What do the Scriptures say? That should be our question and when Scripture no longer speaks on the matter then surely we began teaching the precepts of men. Just my opinion :-) Steve |

Hi Steve, This will probably get zapped, but you asked, so here goes: This has actually happened - Jack marries Jill (they even have a child) but Jack decides he was supposed to be a Jill so after 2plus years of psychoanylisis and surgeries, child now has mom Jill number 1 and mom Jill number 2. Jill2 has not started running after other Jacks, neither has the real Jill. We know that the Bible in essence says this is a no-no (for Jill2, err Jack) but the law doesn't so it's now a done deal leaving the real Jill out on a limb that the Bible does not seem to address because so far there has been no sexual immorality or adultery involved, just a sex-change which is civilally legal nowadays. Where does this leave the real wife? (And of course, it could be the other way around as well, leaving the original husband in a quandry.) And there are other similar circumstances that come to mind - but let's stick with this one for now. I am definitely PRO-BIBLE, don't get me wrong, but there are things that it just doesn't seem to address. Cheri |

Ah, actually the Bible does address this. Jill 1 would be perfectly justified in pulling up stakes and pitching her tent elsewhere. Many believe that adultery is the only reason for divorce, but this verse seems to dispel that belief. It would be imperative to say that Jill 2 is being immoral, to say the least! And Jill 1, it would seem, would be sharing in that immorality by staying in that relationship, and would be wise indeed to leave town and not to even look in her rearview mirror! Matt 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery." John p.s. you make a good point, and I would agree that the Bible doesn't seem to have answers to all our questions: even some of the questions it raises. But maybe that's more our fault, and not the Bible's. |
