Dear ZtheBrerean, A special welcome to the forum! Based on your posts thus far, I am undisguisedly and unqualifiedly delighted by your entrance into our midst! It is always good to find a new participant who demonstrates the kind of sound hermeneutic. I'm also happy to welcome another monergist in the forum. :-) Autosoterism in general, and synergism in particular, are heavily represented in the forum. Few can offer a fully Scriptural foundation for their doctrine. Most hold to their teachings simply because it is all to which they've been exposed. Others can't reconcile their presuppositions with the Scriptures and, lacking a sola Scriptura foundation, allow their values to supercede the Word. There are probably other reasons for their persistence and pervasiveness. Would you be so kind as to contact me directly by email? (You can see my email in my profile.) I hope to humbly share with you a few things I've learned about harmonious SBF forum life, in an effort benefit us all. Again, I'm happy to have you a fellow member of the Study Bible Forum! Dear Doc; Sorry of the delay in response. Thank you for your welcome support in this perilous time in which we are presently living in. Many might not know what you, or I are talking about, but if they were to find out what autosoterism and synergism meant they might understand how much danger they are in and become monergistic too. Please share with me those things, which you believe that our great God in Christ through the Spirit would have you set forth. I tried to send you this through your email but it is not a proper email address. Blessings in His grace, Ztheberean |

Dear ZtheBerean, Autosoterism is the belief that men must save themselves by some work or other. All religion teaches this, since religion is about man bridging the gap between himself and God. In this sense Christianity is almost the opposite of religion! In other words, Christianity is about God bridging the gap between Himself and man. The Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms defines monergism in this way: "The view that the Holy Spirit is the only agent who effects regeneration of Christians. It is in contrast with synergism, the view that there is a cooperation between the divine and the human in the regeneration process." So, synergism, is -- in effect -- the opposite of monergism. These terms are more theologically precise. Also, their use tends to reduce the amount of hubbub we often get from people whose theology isn't the result of actual study.
