1 | Do you have to be baptized to be saved? | Rom 6:3 | Morant61 | 80984 | ||
Greetings Samantha! Thanks for taking the time to respond! You said: "The faith that Paul wrote about -- faith in God -- is the same faith James speaks of -- faith that works. When THIS faith is exhibited, one is saved." Do you mean that works are one of the evidences of salvation or one of the causes of salvation? Because, if you understand James 2:24 as refering to salvation, then 'works' are a cause of salvation. If this is the case, then there is a contradiction with Paul since James 2:24 would then be saying 'by works', while Pauls says 'not by works'. Something cannot be both 'by works' and 'not by works' in the same sense. That would be like saying that something is 'real' and 'not real', or 'true' and 'not true' at the same time. So, obviously, there is some difference between what Paul is talking about and what James is talking about. My case is that 'justification' in James 2:24 is not saying that one is 'justified by works' but that one is 'shown to be justified' by one's works. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi, I believe I'm saying what James and Paul are saying. A person is saved through faith that works. It is not a saving faith if it has no works. It is not a saving faith if trust is in the works. James and Paul are depicted as speaking of two faiths. One that men see and one that God sees. Such is not the case. The same faith that one has initially at salvation is the same faith that carries him through to the last day. Faith works. - Samantha Hear because faith comes through hearing. Believe because God loves you. Repent because Jesus died for sin. Confess because it is good news. Be Baptized to be united with Christ. Stay faithful 'til death and you will receive the crown of life. |

Greetings Samantha! Thanks for the reply! However, I would point out that I have never made the claim that two different faiths are being discussed. Further, I agree with you that faith works. What I have been trying to get you to discuss though is the relationship between works and faith. My understanding of this relationship is: 1) First comes God's grace, 2) Followed by our faith response to God's grace, 3) Followed by salvation, 4) Followed by our works or obedience as a result of our salvation. This would be fully in agreement with what Paul says in Eph. 2:8-10. However, I'm not sure that you are saying the same thing, since you write: "A person is saved through faith that works." Yet, Paul explicitly denies that works play any role in our salvation. See Eph. 2:8-9. Notice that Eph. 2:8-9 doesn't say by faith and works, or faith and some works, or faith and works of faith. It simply says 'not by works'. p.s. - I believe I asked you a question awhile back, but I may have missed your response. Do you believe that we are saved, or that we will be saved?
