1 | Visit other churches? | Rom 16:16 | charis | 33949
Dear Saints of the forum, Just curious, but for those among you that are committed members of a local church: How many other churches have you visited in say, the last 5 years? Of those, how many were of different denominations? Someone is going to ask, "Why do you ask?" I'll tell you after I get some answers! :-) In Christ Jesus, charis |

Hi Charis, my wife and I have probably been in seven different churches in the past five years and I would say that the denominations were close to that amount. I always have a rule that I go by though; if those that regularly attend any particular church don't carry a Bible into the service with them I won't bother going in. If those in charge of the church aren't going to teach me from the Bible they are wasting their time in their service, not mine. This is what Paul commanded to be done and I figure I should be on the receiving end of his advice. 2 Tim. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. This means Bible doctrine NOT church doctrine!! 2 Tim. 3:15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. The way I see it every leader of a church better be able to back up what he says with the Bible and not just with his pet verses. Hay, this sound like I am on my soapbox instead of a simple answer; sorry about that! CDBJ |

3 | Visit other churches? | Rom 16:16 | Hank | 34103
CDBJ: Speaking of Bible-carrying church members, there is a church in our town -- I know it well -- where you are most unlikely to see anyone toting a Bible around campus. Some years ago there were two families who regularly brought Bibles to the worship service. They were actually subjects of ridicule, if not out and out scorn. Neither family stayed long at that church; they moved on to a better climate. That church has steadily lost membership over the years; they are limping along still, struggling to pay their bills and keep the doors open. They don't seem to know or care why they are headed for extinction. The moral is, if you don't see Bibles going in, you are not likely to feel fed when you are coming out. --Hank

It makes sense to me; those that aren't using the Bible in their church services are only practicing ritual with out reality and all that repetition would have to get old after awhile. My wife was in a church like that before God revealed the truth of Christ to her and the assurance of salvation. She says that when she looks back it blows her mind how she was caught up in all that meaningless ritual. She said that she use to have a constant fear of dying and not knowing if she would make it to heaven. Praise the Lord for the truth of His Word. CDBJ
