1 | Baptism in the holy spirit? | Acts 19:1 | Taleb | 76758 | ||
Searcher, I need to differ with you about a few conclusions you have drawn. You stated, “Where (known) tongues is one of the gifts - listed last, therefore not a greater gift (vs 31).” Does that mean that at the end of 1 Cor 13: where faith, hope and love are listed and it explains that the greatest of these three is love – faith is the least because it is listed first? And, if “tongues” were “known languages”, how come Paul spoke it more than anyone else, yet he admitted he had no idea what he was saying. He also suggested “pray that there be someone to interpret so people would know what was said.” Duh. Whoops, Acts 15:8 does not say "no tongues". Peter is most likely talking about his time with Cornelius. That ties Acts 15 with Acts 10. They spoke in tongues BEFORE they were baptized in water. If it wasn’t Cornelius, than that meant Peter ministered to more Gentiles than most think. Anyway, Peter stated that THE GENTILES received the Holy Spirit EVEN AS WE DID. Not differently than we did. Not different than anyone else did. The “evidence” – speaking in tongues. And Acts 8:15-17 – How do you suppose Simon realized people received the Holy Spirit by Peter laying his hands upon them? What “evidence” did those people who received the Holy Spirit offer Simon? And don't you suppose the many who were added to the church in Acts 2:38-41? They were promised the "gift of the Holy Spirit" and we can rest assured He come into them with His gifts which bring us back to 1 Corinthians. And IF that whole church wasn't "speaking in tongues", then why did Paul lecture about how not to, and how to use the gift of tongues? Of ALL the churches where Peter, John, Paul etc. preached and visited throughout their ministry, how many do you dare to suppose weren’t filled with people filled with the Holy Spirit following their “teacher’s” example of speaking in tongues? Be ye filled with all He offers, Taleb |

1 Cor 13:13 "But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love" ... love is first; faith and hope are second 1 Cor 12:28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. I see the words "first", "second" and "then" ... which shows me tongues is last. It could be all four; including healings, helps and administrations are the least gifts. Paul spoke it (tongues) more than anyone else because he had been to many towns. I realize that he may have spoken Greek. But, he could have just as well spoke in the native tongue (too). I am not sure if Barabas or Silas spoke Greek. So when he spoke, they may not have understand him, anyway. Acts 15:8 may refer to Cornelius ... even tho it seems redundant. He already spoke to the same group in chapter 11. Nonetheless, there are only two conversions where tongues is seen - Cornelius and the Gentiles and the disciples of John Acts 8:15-19 doesn't indicate what Simon saw. But, when you became a Christian, was there an immediate change in you? Could others see it? That is what Simon saw, I believe. In Acts 2:38, "the gift of the Holy Spirit" is singular. I believe it is His indwelling us. There are gifts (plural) of the Spirit (1 Cor 12), whcih includes tongues. In 1 Corinthians 14, it seems like the whole church was speaking something, all (many) at the same time. Paul told them how to do it. Today, we have churches who have all (many) speak at the same time. They are in ERROR, too. "Of ALL the churches where Peter, John, Paul etc. preached and visited throughout their ministry, how many do you dare to suppose weren’t filled with people filled with the Holy Spirit following their “teacher’s” example of speaking in tongues?" ... After Pentecost ... did Peter or John speak, or even write about speaking in tongues. Searcher |

Searcher, I will praise the Lord my God who brought His children out of Egypt with a mighty hand! I will praise the Lord my God who parted the sea! I will praise the Lord my God who parted the river Jordan! I will praise the Lord my God who sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins! I will praise the Lord my God! Your post really sums up and answers, for me anyway, all of the questions that could be asked about speaking in tounges. Your writing in this post I know will always come to my mind when and if I should ever discuss the subject of speaking in tounges. Thank you for your being a blessing to this forum! David (Cyclist) I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |
