1 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | humbledbyhisgrace | 192133
WOS, Just so happens I was preparing for a Sunday School lesson a few weeks ago and the lesson was in Acts. Although it did not cover this passage of scripture I was reading through several chapters and came across this passage. One of the commentaries I looked at pointed to the Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9) (?) I'm no expert on the scriptures and know less about the OT then the NT but are we not still under the Noahic covenant? Also, I've been trying to research the Noahic Covenant and understand it better and based on what I have found so far I'm not even sure what verses this would include. I've seen it listed as Genesis 9 and also Genesis 8:20—9:17. Genesis 9:4 is what the commentary was pointing to regarding Acts 15:20 that got me interested in your post. I expect to learn something from this post as I'm sure the more learned among us will help me on this but I found the post interesting as I was just recently looking at it so I jumped feet first just to get these thoughts / questions out there :-) If not for His grace, could I stand at all? 2 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | MJH | 192276
Jews in Jesus day believed that "God fearers", those Gentiles who believed in the One true God but were not circumsised into Israel, were to follow the Noahic covenant in which they found 7 laws. You can do a search of my name "mjh" and "noah" to find many more details on this. Acts 15 requirements are all found in what the Jews saw in the Noah covenant which was given to all peoples. Those that were not included in Acts 15 were not necessary because they were already a part of the rule of law among the Gentiles. Sorry that this is so scant, but it's late and I did post a lot on this in the past. MJH |
