1 | What about Matthew 19:16-19 | John 3:16 | welldigger | 65107 | ||
Are you saying that it is not required to keep the commandments in order to have eternal life? But what about this scripture: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, WHAT GOOD THING SHALL I DO, THAT I MAY HAVE ETERNAL LIFE? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but IF THOU WILT ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Hi welldigger, All we have to do is believe that Jesus is Lord. If He is Lord, then He is Lord of our lives and of course we will obey Him. The rich man of your passage in Matthew was asking Jesus "What good thing shall I do? The rich man said later "All these things have I kept [done]; what am I still lacking?" He was concerned about doing good things. And as a rich man he dealt in many things and he was active in many things. I think of Martha in Luke 10:40, "But Martha was distracted with her preparations; and she came up to Him, and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; [but only a few things are necessary, really only one, NASB 1977], l995, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Mary spent time listening to the Lord's word, sitting at the feet of (God). See Luke 10:39 John 6:29bff says, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in (Him) whom He sent." You see, that is the only work that we do; that is, believe in (Him). John 3:16. When we look again at Matthew we should see that the rich man was concerned about the "good thing" that he should do. He should really be concerned about the "good thing" that is right there with him, namely, Jesus the Christ. John 2:45, "Phillip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazreth, the *Son of Joseph. And Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, "Come and see." That is what we should invite everyone to do. Come and see if this "good thing" is really God; the only One who is good. There is none that is righteous, no not one. All we can do is believe in Him and be grateful for His grace and show it by our keeping His will. From the heart, Ray |
