1 | What about John 14:15? | John 3:16 | Hank | 63905
Hello, Welldigger. Quoting John 14:15, you ask "But what about this Scripture?" ..... Well, what about it? What are you asking? If, as I assume, you wish comment on it in relation to Jesus' teaching on being His obedient disciples, there is little upon which to comment. The passage is clear. There can be no doubt that regenerate believers are commanded to be obedient believers. If, on the other hand, you are seeking to connect the verse with the faith-plus-works-equals-salvation idea, I don't believe the passage remotely suggests anything of the kind. In the NASB the verse, John 14:15, reads: "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." Paul makes the clear distinction between the roles of faith and works: "Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but beieves in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness." [Romans 4:4,5] Jesus and Paul are teaching the same thing. Jesus says that if we love Him, [have saving faith in Him and have thus become regenerated believers, have received justification through Him] we'll keep His commandments [as regenerate believers who are being sanctified in our walk with Christ through obedience to His commands]. Paul is teaching the same thing. Paul defines works as a "wage...not credited as a favor, but as what is due." And faith he describes as being "credited as righteousness" to one who "believes in Him who justifies the ungodly." --Hank
2 | What about John 14:15? | John 3:16 | welldigger | 63948
I was asking about John 14:15 with regard to the initial question "What should a person do to please God so that God will allow that person's soul to go to heaven (have eternal life) as opposed to sending that soul to hell (eternal death)?". That is, if a person doesn't love Jesus, it seems reasonable to me that God would not allow that person's soul to go to heaven, or have eternal life, enter into life, inherit eternal life, etc. Let me explain what I'm talking about also by the scriptures: The Word is Jesus and Jesus was God according to the scripture in John 1:1-17. And Jesus therefore is one with God by this scripture: For there are three that bear record in heaven, THE FATHER, THE WORD, AND THE HOLY GHOST: AND THESE THREE ARE ONE. (1 John 5:7) So, if Jesus and God are one, when God said something, Jesus said it, and when Jesus said something, God said it. This is also stated in this scripture: Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK UNTO YOU I SPEAK NOT OF MYSELF: BUT THE FATHER THAT DWELLETH IN ME, HE DOETH THE WORKS. (John 14:10) So, if Jesus says “keep my commandments”, as in John 14:15 (among others), then “my” refers to God’s commandments, which are also Jesus’ commandments, and Jesus’ commandments, which are also God’s commandments, because Jesus is one with God. Now, in John 14:15, Jesus/God gives us a command in a logic statement, and God cannot lie, that “IF” a person loves Jesus/God, to keep Jesus’/God’s commandments. Logically, if someone does NOT keep the commandments, then they do not love Jesus/God. Now I am no brain surgeon, but I have trouble believing that if someone does not love God’s only begotten Son that God sent out of love toward the world, to save or redeem the world, and that person being one of the ones in the world, that God would allow that person’s soul to go to heaven (or have eternal life). Hope that helps to clear up what I was asking about. |

3 | What about John 14:15? | John 3:16 | John Reformed | 63966
Dear Welldigger, The question you pose arises from the belief that salvation depends on what man must do. I believe that salvation depends on what God has done for man. No one loves Christ perfectly. No one keeps His commandments perfectly either. Even Paul confessed Rom 7:18,19 "For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want." I depend upon a righteousness that comes by faith in Christ. I require grace to obey even the spirit of the Law. And as for good works, I pray that God will grant me the desire and the will to accomplish them. 2 Thess 3:4 We have CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. Perfectionism is unscriptural. We must await our glorification before perfection is a reality in our lives. I hope this helps. John Reformed |

4 | You do sometimes break the commandments | John 3:16 | welldigger | 65106
You said "No one keeps His commandments perfectly either." Are you saying that sometimes you do break the commandments? I think that's what you are saying, but I want to be sure and not make an assumption.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. Yes, I am a sinner. John |

6 | You probably have read this scripture | John 3:16 | welldigger | 65114
Please bare with me John. Basically, I am asking the same questions that God asked me awhile back. That is, I used to believe the same way that you do today awhile back. But God came and showed me that what I was believing was not in agreement with the scriptures and was a lie. Then He showed me the truth and I really am just wanting to share that with anyone that is willing to allow Him to show them also. The next question He asked me is this: You have probably read this verse: For THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23) Wages equals payment, right? So, if the payment for sin is the death of a soul in hell, then how come you won't have to pay for those sins that you committed by the death of your soul in hell? |
