1 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | charis | 378
Dear Kathy, Yes the wine was alcoholic, in the sense that there is alcohol in grape juice. Though nobody knows the actual percentage, it is safe to say that this wine was less potent than present-day wine.

Was the wine alcoholic or not? Yes it was. Here is the proof. Genesis 9 21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. Genesis 19 30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day. |

Free Thinker: I don't propose to debate the question of whether the wine of John 2:10 was alcoholic, but I do question your "proof." It's quite a quantum leap from the wine of Genesis to the wine of John 2:10 don't you think? --Hank
4 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | Mathew | 84465
Free Thinker: Also a quick not on the Passover meal: It was to be free from all forms of leaven (Exodus 12:19). Fermentation is the identical process of leavening! If the bread was to be free from leaven, which is a type of sin, then we can be sure that the wine, a symbol of Jesus' blood, used at the Last Supper would also be free from the poison of alcohol. The perfect, sinless blood of Jesus would never be symbolized by corrupt and putrefying old wine. Matt |

5 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | Asis | 84476
Matt Where was the last Passover Seder you attended held. The wine used in the Seder of Passover is in fact a alcoholic wine. Even though the bread which is the bread baked on the backs of the Hebrews as they left Egypt has no leaven. If it was just grape juice then it would be grape juice now. |
