Subject: Was the wine alcoholic or not |
Bible Note: Greetings Bingobongo! I appreciate the thoughtful response my new friend. You are correct about the new skins being able to stretch. But, there was also another reason for putting new wine into new skins. The new skins would not contain old fermentation, and thus would prevent the new wine from fermenting for a longer time. While the skins would not stop the process of fermentation, they would slow it. One ancient writer by the name of Columella expressly comments on this reason. So, the purpose of my original statement was that 'oinos' can refer to a fresh or new wine, which had not yet been fermented. Of course, it eventually would ferment, but the process would be slowed down considerably. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
