1 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | Hank | 84473
Free Thinker: You directed your response to Mathew although by its content I believe it was meant for me. You write: "I believe the question was "Was the wine alcoholic or not? The answer is yes. How does John 2:10 change that?" ..... John 2:10 certainly doesn't change anything about the wine that Noah drank in Genesis 9 or that Lot drank in Genesis 19 that made them as drunk as fiddlers. But the question on the table concerns the properties of the wine mentioned in John 2:10. You claim proof that this wine contained alcohol by citing two examples given in Genesis. That's no better proof than claiming that the boat on which Jesus sailed the Sea of Galilee was identical with the ark that prevented Noah and his family from perishing in the flood. --Hank
2 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | FreeThinker | 84538
How and when did it change? We know from the bible that the ark was like no other boat. Matthew 9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. Luke 7:33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; To me at least these show that wine was alchohlic even in the new testament. |

3 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | Morant61 | 84544
Greetings Free Thinker! This is a complex subject, about which I have posted many times. There are 11 words in the Old Testament which are translated "wine." There are 4 words in the New Testament which are translated "wine." Each of the words have slightly different meanings and can refer to the product of the grape in each of it?s various stages. So, one cannot simply make the statement that every word translated 'wine' in the Bible always refers to an alcoholic beverage. One must do quite a bit of study on this topic and a careful examination of context to determine how each word is used. If you would like to read some of the word studies I have posted on this topic, you can enter the number '11707' into the search box on the top right, or you can select the seach option on the top left of the page and search for my user name (Morant61) and enter 'wine' as the subject. The first option will led you to one post, while the second will led you to all of the posts I have made on this subject. Happy hunting! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim, As I am new here, and I haven't read all of the responses to your posting about wine: alcoholic or non-alcoholic content, I wouldn't want to bring something to your attention that has already been said. Therefore I won't tip my hand and begin a discussion that I assume has already been beaten like a dead horse, so to speak. The reason that I am writing this is to call your attention to something that you posted. You said: "1) oinos (3631): This word is used 33 times in the New Testament. It is comparable to ‘yayin’ in that it can refer to either fermented or unfermented wine. The prime example being Mt. 9:17, where the fresh new wine is to be put into a new bottle to keep it from fermenting." I commend you on your study of the Greek and Hebrew words associated with wine, but I would like to lovingly point out that the reason that "new wine" was put into new skins was because it was in the process of fermentation and therefore would be allowed to stretch the new wineskins as it fermented. Fermentation always builds up pressure on its container as it turns and old skins would burst under this pressure. I just thought that you might want to re-think this statement. Nothing critical, so please do not take it that way. God bless. |

5 | Was the wine alcoholic or not | John 2:10 | FreeThinker | 84556
My apologies. When I first read the question, “Was the wine alcoholic or not?” I answered that generic question, I did not realize that this was attached to John 2:10. I have heard many people say that the wine in biblical times was not alcoholic, which is not true. There are occasions in the New Testament where non-alcoholic wine was used. I am certain that the stories of Noah and Lott where told to encourage people not to over indulge. Otherwise what use do those specific parts of the stories have? Some of your responses have been educational, and I appreciate that. Most of the time I get the “Christian Robot” that only knows what their clergy told them. They have never taken the time to read the bible themselves. When I give a response, I try to give chapter and verses of where I got my information. I will read and appreciate all responses that have references. |
