1 | Who is the we in John4:20 | John 15:1 | Sandman | 14673
Kindness, I agree with you about Romans 12:1,2. "The greatest sermon we ever preach should be the lives we live." In John 4:22, Jesus refers to himself and his culture as "we." This is not a reference to the Trinity. Important background information for these verses is that Samaritans and Jews often stereotypically grouped one another by their culture. Just as the woman grouped Jesus and his culture together in verse 20 by saying "you Jews," Jesus responds to her by using the same "stereotype," if you will. Jesus' only purpose for saying "WE do not know what we worship" was to show that the culture she had associated Jesus with (the Jews) was confused about worship. Jesus does not imply that any part of the Trinity (which includes himself) is confused about worship. This is further emphasized in the last part of verse 22: "for salvation is from the Jews." If taken literally, one might incorrectly deduce that the Jews can bring forth salvation, or that salvation is for the Jews only. But the true meaning of the verse is this: since the Samaritan woman had grouped Jesus with the Jewish culture, Jesus responded by pointing out that "your salvation can only come from a man who is part of this Jewish culture." And, in verse 26, Jesus would point out that the man from such a culture was himself. Sandman |

2 | Who is the we in John4:20 | John 15:1 | KINDNESS | 14694
Greetings Sandman, I do believe you misquoted John 4:22. Doesn't it read "you worship what you do not know"? Not We etc. I do agree with you about the salvation part refering to Jesus who was a Jew/ Savior/ Lamb who takes away the sins of the world not just the Jews. Thanks for your participation. It is encouraging to know that there are believers out there that enjoy a good sword drill. Smile. Kindness
