1 | Salvation is a gift to be accepted | Luke 6:46 | Morant61 | 141302
Greetings Angel! You wrote: "Sadly, many believe, and preach, that we can sin with impunity since Christ did it all for us!" I keep wondering who these 'many' are! ;-) I have never in my life heard anyone preach or teach that a believer can sin with impunity! I am sure that there is probably someone out there, but I have a hard time believing that 'many' what be an appropriate description of the number! ;-) Anyway, I wanted to address 1 John 5:18. While some reject it, I believe the best way to view 1 John 5:18 is as a reference to habitual sin. Most believe that the present active tense has the meaning in this passage. Thus, John is not saying that a Christian cannot sin, but that a Christian will not habitually sin. Habitual sin is impossible for one who is abiding in Christ. This is why it would be wrong to teach that it is okay for Christians to sin. Habitual sin is evidence that one is not really born of God. One who is born of God, and walking according to the Spirit, will not habitually sin. One final note of interest! There is some who believe that 'he who is born of God' may be a reference to Christ Himself, and not to believers. This would certainly change the whole meaning of the passage. John would then be saying something like: Christ does not sin and we are abiding in Christ; thus, how can we sin? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

2 | Salvation is a gift to be accepted | Luke 6:46 | Ray | 144913
Hi Tim, I go with the NASB for 1 John 5:18. I wonder what your input would be for 1 John 3:9. Could it be interpreted with another "He is born of God"? 1 John 3:9, No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin because He [sic] is born of God. This suggests to me the contrast between 1 John 3:10 and 1 John 5:19. 1 John 3:10, "...anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother." 1 John 5:19, "We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one." We are "of God" when we practice what He tells us. From the heart, Ray |

3 | Salvation is a gift to be accepted | Luke 6:46 | Morant61 | 145067
Greetings Ray! I'm a little sleepy right now, but I would probably stay with the NASB on 1 John 3:9 and translate it as 'he', not 'He'. The structure in 1 John 5:18 is a little different than in 3:9. I would certainly agree that we are 'of God' when we pracitice what He tells us! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

4 | Salvation is a gift to be accepted | Luke 6:46 | Ray | 145068
Hi Tim, I agree with you in this. The structure is different in the two passages. Plus there is the variant reading of "him" instead of "himself" in the NU text which lends credence to the "He who was born of God keeps him" interpretation. So I would go with the NASB for both passages. 1) Looking at the 1 John 3:9ff passage again, however, would you go with another variant reading for verse 16. Green's Literal Translation for this verse is, "By this we have known the love of God, because that (One) laid down His life on behalf of us; and on behalf of the brothers we ought to lay down (our) lives." Here we see the love "of God". From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! Would you do me a favor? Look at the front of Green's Literal Translation and see if you can find out which text it is based upon. I looked up the verse in all the versions I have, and only one (the TR of 1881) includes 'of God' in the verse. The TR of 1550 does not include that phrase either. Anyway, based upon the Nestle Aland text, I would translate the verse as follows: "In this, we know the love, because that One on behalf of us the life of Him He laid down, and we own on behalf of the brothers the lives to lay down." (Literal version) My smoothed out version would be: "In this, we know love because He laid down His life for us, and we owe (it) to lay down our lives for our brothers." Hi Tim, I am not familiar with the texts so I will just tell you what I read. In the preface, Green speaks well of the Received Text of the New Testament. The back cover says it is the Greek Textus Receptus. And the copyright page says, "The Greek text -1976 by the Trinitarian Bible Society, London, England, and used by permission." 1) For the verse under discussion, 1 John 3:18, I would go with your smoothed down version if you included the love "of God". If you could not go with that inclusion, then I would go with the Literal version; for the variant reading says to me, "Get this right." As a counter of nouns and pronouns of Deity, I see the desirability of a total of three for that verse. 2) I trust that you will keep your priorities in balance and get enough sleep, my friend. :) From the heart, Ray |

Greetings Ray! Thanks my friend! I was just curious as to which text was being used. I have noticed a couple of times now that it went with variant readings that I couldn't even find listed. :-) Smoothing out a translation and making it readable is one of the most difficult tasks in the translation process! ;-) Alas, 'enough sleep' is a phrase seldom uttered from my lips! ;-) Over 20 years of working third shift has hopelessly upset my internal clock.
