1 | What is the biblical def of apostle | Luke 6:13 | Country Girl | 133228
Just my one and a half cents' worth. There's a couple more points that could be thrown in: First: Acts 1:20 "For it is written in the book of Psalms, 'LET HIS HOMESTEAD BE MADE DESOLATE, AND LET NO ONE DWELL IN IT'; and, 'LET ANOTHER MAN TAKE HIS OFFICE.' Acts 1:21 "Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us- Apparently, these men agreed with Peter that they must fulfill the prophecy. Second: 1 Cor 15:6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 1 Cor 15:7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 1 Cor 15:8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 1 Cor 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1 Cor 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. Apparently from vs 8, Paul didn't consider himself a legitimate apostle so one could argue that he is the odd man out and Mathias was part of the proper 12. Ultimately, I don't really think this basic question at the beginning of this thread can be answered Biblically this side of Judgment Day but I just want to try and complete the picture. Blessings to you all. Country Girl |

2 | What is the biblical def of apostle | Luke 6:13 | james210 | 133234
Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 1 Corinthians 1:1 Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 1 Corinthians 9:1 Am I am not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? 2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; 2 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, 2 Timothy 1:11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. Titus 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; --- Although the Bible never says Paul was 'numbered with the eleven' to replace Judas as Matthias was (Acts 1:26), every letter except Philippians, both Thessalonians, and Philemon Paul introduces himself as an 'apostle'. |

Yes, very good! I scanned through all these references. I noticed that Paul is not calling himself an apostle by his own authority. Instead God called him to the position (Romans 1:1, 1 Cor 1:1); God willed him to the position (1 Cor 1:1, 2 Cor 1:1, Eph 1:1, Col 1:1, 2 Tim 1:1, Titus 1:1); God validated him in the position (2 Cor 12:12); God sealed him in the position with evangelical fruit (1 Cor 9:1-2); Jesus and God authorized him in the position (Gal 1:1, 1 Tim 2:7, 2 Tim 1:11); God and Jesus commanded him to the postion (1 Tim 1:1). Paul called himself the least of the apostles, because he had persecuted the church (1 Cor 15:9). Thank you for drawing our attention to this, James210! |
