Bible Question: What is the biblical definition of an apostle? |
Bible Answer: The word is from the Greek "apostolos" which means an "ambassador or messenger commissioned to carry out the instructions of the commissioning agent." The apostles were men specifically and personally commissioned by Jesus Christ to communicate the Gospel to the lost, and to instruct believers in sound doctrine. There were only 12 of them: 11 were original disciples of Jesus during His earthly mission. (In my opinion Matthias was not one of them. Paul, on the other hand, was directly commissioned by Christ on the road to Damascus.) |
