1 | Did Jesus teach hate? | Luke 14:26 | compudex | 101202
One opinion: Jesus was eating and talking with the chief Pharisees and He knew there hearts and their deeds. The Scripture says they were watching Him. Jesus talked about how they lifted themselves up too much. Then one of them said (14:15) "Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God." Jesus responded to this platitude with the parable of a great supper. I think Jesus was relating to the Pharisees (because they knew the old testament) the account in Duet. 13:6-8* where it condemns putting other gods before the Lord. And when the bidden to the supper parable all had excuses not to come to the supper, in essence, is what they were doing. Putting there own interests before the Lord's. And with that, the word 'hate' is well used. And it doesn't conflict with the Commandments in that cense. *Deu 13:6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; |

2 | Family commitment? | Luke 14:26 | seeking4truth | 101219
Thanks for your reply. It is interesting the different viewpoints put forth in the Bible, isn't it? On one hand, Paul says that a man who doesn't take care of his own household is not fit to serve in the church in an official capacity and to love his wife as Christ loves the church. On the other hand, Jesus teaches to leave your wife and children to follow Him. Sure has me confussed. It doesn't sound to me like they were preaching the same gospel. Any thoughts? seeking4truth |

Also, may I say, Seeker, that neither of those passages is presenting the Gospel. Those statements were made to people who had already accepted the Gospel and to those considering it. What is the Gospel? "I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, …by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (1 Corinthians 15). Jesus says we must repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). We must also trust in him (Psalm 37:5; John 14:1). When we do, he changes us, so we are fit for heaven. He also gives us new desires and a new attitude. He gives us the Holy Spirit, and that opens up for us a whole new world of understanding. God may use someone to point out his word to you, but it is he himself who makes it meaningful. |
