1 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | JCrichton | 122964
Hi, Bob! I think that that is yet another mystery that will never be unfolded by human understanding: Matthew 28:1-7 clearly places Jesus' resurrection on the first day of the week (Sunday). John 19:31-42 clearly places Jesus death and burial on the day right before Sabbath (Saturday). ...we may theorize and present as many conjectures as we please... it won't change a thing: Christ died and was buried on Friday and Rose to Life on Sunday... Perhaps that missing day in our calculations could be explained by Matthew's account: From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' ...But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. And suddenly, the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, the rocks were split, the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy poeple rose from the dead, and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the holy city and appeared to a number of people. (Matthew 27:45-53) Again, I am not saying that this is the first day of his death/burial... just citing it as an example of what could have meant to be the first day. Another explanation... it could be that from God's perspective any portion of a day is a complete day-night cycle. Again, we may never have full revelation in the flesh... this does not mean that we should question God's Word because we cannot fully comprehend every single passage of the Bible. God Bless! Angel |

Hi Angel, I appreciate your answer and agree with you that there are many things that we will not understand while in this world. Respectfully although, I believe that a healthy curiosity and desire to learn is not "questioning God's Word". There are some Christian traditions that are mired in ignorance and even pagan origins. I'm not saying that what we are talking about here is in that category, but that because something is a tradition, in itself, does not give that practice legitimacy. Mat 15:3 And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? We should always try to learn what has true biblical foundations and what does not. I cannot assume that every tradition is rooted in the Bible just because it has been practiced for a long time. 3 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | JCrichton | 123031
Hi, Bob! You are correct! I did not mean to infer that we should not seek answers--Jesus Himself commanded us to seek the Kingdom of God (Matthew 7:7)... my concern is that we do not become so clinical as to loose sight of the real goal: Christ Jesus. Some of the times we will find answers even when we are not searching for them; other times we will knock our heads off in futile attempts to find discernment and it will evade us just as we are almost tasting it! Our Faith should be centered on Jesus' words to Thomas (John 20:29)... so it is good to seek answers but always remembering that if there's something lacking it is not God's Word that has shortcomings, it is our understanding that is deficient! 4 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | Signmanbob | 123050
Hi Angel, You put it very well! Before I became a Christian I could not understand the Bible because I would read it with the intention of finding faults or contradictions that I could use for arguments against Christianity. For some reason one time I resolved to read it from the perspective that it was God's true word and if there was something that I didn't understand then it was, like you said, my understanding that was deficient and God would eventually reveal it to me. When I approached the Bible from this perspective it began to all fit together in harmony and made perfect sense. The Bible is like a building with only one entrance. That entrance is Jesus Christ. In order to enter into the Bible one must go in the only entrance otherwise none of it makes sense and it will always seem like being on the outside. The questions I run into now are more just, like I said, curiosities. My faith is rooted in God’s beloved Son. In Christ, SignmanBob |

Hi, Bob! That is an excellent metaphor! I remember my first conscious understanding of the Bible: a close friend, who was a self-professed atheist, and I had a debate on God and the Bible... he confessed that he had never personally read the Bible and I challenged him to read it before totally embrasing atheism. That day I learned that God was using my friend to bring me into the fold: I had only a general understanding of the Bible and I discovered that I could not defend my position as a Christian if I only knew God peripherally! God Bless! Angel |
