2 | WHAT DAY OF THE WEEK DID JESUS DIE | Mark 8:31 | Signmanbob | 122889
I also wondered about this because Him dieing on Good Friday just didn’t add up. Here is some info I gathered up that might help. In Christ, Signmanbob Mat 12:39 But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and (yet) no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; Mat 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jhn 19:14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!" Jhn 19:31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and (that) they might be taken away. New King James Version copyright 1982 Thomas Nelson on the sabbath day, for that sabbath day was an high day--or "great" day--the first day of unleavened bread, and, as concurring with an ordinary sabbath, the most solemn season of the ecclesiastical year. Hence their peculiar jealousy lest the law should be infringed. Jamieson, Robert; A.R. Fausset; and David Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible. Blue Letter Bible. 19 Feb 2000. 2 Jun 2004. August 5, 2001 (Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, 866-295-4143,) - The following study is by Dr. James D. Crumpton, founder, Maranatha Baptist Mission, Natchez, Mississippi: “The Lord Jesus was placed on the cross about 9:00 A.M. our time and was there until about 4:00 P.M. It was on Wednesday! He was taken down from the cross and placed in the tomb before sunset-- before the beginning of the sabbath. Note that this was not the beginning of the regular weekly sabbath at sunset on Friday, but a "high sabbath"--a Passover sabbath which came on Thursday that week! (See Lev. 23:5-7, where we find that the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was a sabbath day.) At about sunset on Thursday He had been in the grave one day and one night. At about sunset on Friday, He had been in the grave two days and two nights. Then, just after the three full days and nights, He arose. He arose as it began to dawn the first day of the week (just after sunset Saturday, our time). The women came early Sunday morning, our time, but He was already gone. The expression "on the third day" in the Gospels referring to His resurrection would be "after the third day" in our way of saying it.” Way of Life Literature. Copyright 1997 – 2001 P.O. 3 | WHAT DAY OF THE WEEK DID JESUS DIE | Mark 8:31 | justme | 122939
Signmanbob: I respectfully would like to give you a better understanding. The Jewisk law regarde any part of a day as a day. A day was sunset to sunset. Jesus was put to death on the day of preperation, Friday. They had to place Jesus in the tomb before sunset. So the part of Friday is considered day one. Saturday is day two. Sunday, resurrection day is the third day. This is how the three days is arrived. This is how the majority of orthodox Christianity has view this from the earliest church fathers time. I can not see how by using Scripture you can come any other conclusion. Hope this helps. Any thoughts? justme |

4 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | Signmanbob | 122950
Justme, I appreciate you trying to bring some light to this for me but I still have a little problem because the Bible says that Jesus will be dead for three days and three nights. If any part of the day is regarded as the whole day then why does God's word make it a point to specify days and nights. Friday and Friday night-Saturday and Saturday night-Sunday and Sunday night seems to have Him resurrecting on Monday morning! Mat 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. You will have to forgive me because I know that I am ignorant on ancient Jewish culture but obviously many Biblical scholars (including Dr. James D. Crumpton and Ronald L. Dart) are having a problem with this issue also so that makes me feel a little better. At least I'm not the Lone Ranger. I thank God that He sent His beloved Son to die for our sins whether it was on Wednesday or Friday! God bless you, SignmanBob |

5 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | JCrichton | 122964
Hi, Bob! I think that that is yet another mystery that will never be unfolded by human understanding: Matthew 28:1-7 clearly places Jesus' resurrection on the first day of the week (Sunday). John 19:31-42 clearly places Jesus death and burial on the day right before Sabbath (Saturday). ...we may theorize and present as many conjectures as we please... it won't change a thing: Christ died and was buried on Friday and Rose to Life on Sunday... Perhaps that missing day in our calculations could be explained by Matthew's account: From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' ...But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. And suddenly, the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, the rocks were split, the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy poeple rose from the dead, and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the holy city and appeared to a number of people. (Matthew 27:45-53) Again, I am not saying that this is the first day of his death/burial... just citing it as an example of what could have meant to be the first day. Another explanation... it could be that from God's perspective any portion of a day is a complete day-night cycle. Again, we may never have full revelation in the flesh... this does not mean that we should question God's Word because we cannot fully comprehend every single passage of the Bible. God Bless! Angel |

6 | Why does the Bible say days and nights? | Mark 8:31 | EdB | 122971
Angel I disagree it says He died before 'the Sabbath' this does not say a weekly sabbath but rather THE Sabbath. The day after Passover Sabbath is "The Sabbath". John makes a point of saying it is a High Sabbath John 19:31 There is only one High Sabbath in Judaism and it is the Sabbath after the Passover. I believe that is where the confusion comes from. Messianic Jews understand this and take it as fact Jesus in fact died on Thursday. We also know the Passover lamb had to be killed before sundown 4 days after the day of selection. Jesus fulfilled the day of selection on His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the day we call Palm Sunday. For Him to fulfill His role of the Passover Lamb he would have died before sundown on the fourth following the day of selection, for at sundown the Passover lamb is eaten. That day would be Thursday.
