1 | Can we be baptized with the Holy Ghost? | Matt 3:11 | DocTrinsograce | 173219
Dear Nancy, You wrote, "I think you are trying to understand in your head and not your heart." God never bypasses the mind in His work with us (Romans 10:16-17). That's why He purposefully and explictly gave us a written communication (Hebrews 1:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:16) consisting of words in specific order communicating a single idea at a time (2 Peter 1:20). Furthermore, you will notice that Lionheart, you, and I are all communicating via language. I suppose if we were using music or something we might be able to communicate emotionally -- although you'd have to argue that music bypasses the mind in some way, which is doubtful. We all have the fundamental presupposition that we are conveying ideas via the understanding of the mind. (I'd also affirm that that the notion that there is some kind "knowledge" that is rooted only in the heart is a mystic one, alien to the Scriptures.) Ours is a Study Bible Forum, not a Study Heart Forum or Study Feeling Forum. The words "Study," "Bible," and "Forum" are all predicated on communication; i.e., what you call the "understanding of the mind." It couldn't be otherwise even if we wanted it to be! :-) Other forums might try to do otherwise, but we're stuck -- unapologetically -- with working through the mind. I hope this helps you to benefit more from the forum and to be able to contribute more effectively to the forum. Thank you! In Him, Doc |

2 | Can we be baptized with the Holy Ghost? | Matt 3:11 | nancygorman | 173229
When I said heart, as in the Word, I meant Spirit. That is why we need to be baptised by the Holy Spirit in order to allow HIM to teach us by HIS Spirit, not by our intellect. John 16:13 How be it when HE, the Spirit of Truth comes, HE will guide you to ALL truth: for HE shall not speak of Himself; but what ever he shall hear that he shall speak: and he will show you things to come. You say "OURS is a Study Bible Forum." Is this "OURS" dominated by a people who like to argue against the things of the Spirit? I am not interested in arguing like this, because it borders on blaspheming the Holy Spirit. |

Dear Nancy, So, when you say "heart" you mean "spirit?" But you capitalized "Spirit." The choice of our words can create clarity or confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:8-9) John 16:13 is, indeed, an explanation of the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit in the redeemed. We see Paul speaking in more detail on this in 1 Corinthians 2. There is, indeed, truth that penetrates. Paul calls it "epignosis" or "deep truth." He wrote, "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the KNOWLEDGE of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the KNOWLEDGE of God." (Colossians 1:9-10 KJV, my emphasis) Through the salvific work of the Holy Spirit we are made new creatures able to understand the Truth (1 Corinthians 2:14; cf. Hebrews 10:32). You wrote, "I am not interested in arguing like this, because it borders on blaspheming the Holy Spirit." First, being asked to provide Biblical support for your assertions in the forum is part of what you agreed to when joining. Second, if our beliefs are based in the Word, we should be happy to instruct others as the Holy Spirit has instructed us. If we are unable to clearly state our understanding, then we simply need greater study, so that we can "give an answer to any man." That is something we are all working on. Third, the Holy Spirit teaches the Word and only the Word. Any assertion about Him as revealed in the Word is not blasphemous. Fourth, your participation is not coerced. You might very well be able to explain things from a perspective which we lack. We are not unwilling to be instructed or corrected by the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:14-17). We hope that you will participate in a way that will benefit us all and bring God glory. In Him, Doc |
