1 | How did Matthew know what Jesus prayed? | Matt 26:39 | hgray104 | 153350
How did the author of Matthew know what Jesus said if everyone was asleep when he said it? Who was around to witness it?
2 | How did Matthew know what Jesus prayed? | Matt 26:39 | Mommapbs | 153367
Jesus took Peter and James and John with Him, but according to the previous verses all the disciples (except Judas, who would show up later) were there with Him. So although the three fell asleep, it is certainly possible that some remained awake and heard His prayers. Isn't this a picture of the church today? Many are indeed "asleep" yet there remain some who are awake and listening to the heart of the Savior!

Alternately, since the scripture only records for certain that these three were taken within a stone's throw of the spot where Jesus was praying(i.e. ear-shot), it is very likely that they did, indeed, witness the events that were later recorded in the gospel. For though they each fell asleep at odd times during this historic evening, some or all three were most likely awake during the moments this prayer was uttered. And ultimately, even if it were not so, Jesus, himself, would surely have at some point prior to the writing of the gospels revealed it to them as Amos 3:7 states,"Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets". (Let us not forget that He was, indeed, resurrected and lived/lives on to teach and inspire).

Good reference. Doesn't one need to be "awake" to be taught and inspired? Your point is well taken, but how much better is it for us to be awake and listening rather than to be shaken from our slumber? IMO, THIS is the message of that portion of Scripture. It is a warning for us to be alert and ready to receive that which the Lord has purposed for us to know (and act upon?). One must be "awake" unto Him to hear His voice above the snores of the world. Isn't this God's desire for us? (Watch and pray) And yet many choose to do as these disciples did - sleep. Indeed, "not as I will, but as You will." |
