NASB | Matthew 26:39 ¶ And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 26:39 ¶ And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible [that is, consistent with Your will], let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." |
Subject: How did Matthew know what Jesus prayed? |
Bible Note: Alternately, since the scripture only records for certain that these three were taken within a stone's throw of the spot where Jesus was praying(i.e. ear-shot), it is very likely that they did, indeed, witness the events that were later recorded in the gospel. For though they each fell asleep at odd times during this historic evening, some or all three were most likely awake during the moments this prayer was uttered. And ultimately, even if it were not so, Jesus, himself, would surely have at some point prior to the writing of the gospels revealed it to them as Amos 3:7 states,"Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets". (Let us not forget that He was, indeed, resurrected and lived/lives on to teach and inspire). |
