1 | purgatory is it true? | Matt 22:32 | EdB | 38445 | ||
Emmaus I'm not challenging what you said only asking a question. The three cannons you list definitely bring forth the belief of salvation through grace. My question how does pentance come into the picture. I had a friend that would go to confession and then come out and have to say X number of Hail Marys or Father forgive me (I mean no disrespect but that is what he told me he had to do). Wasn't that works? God is looking for a repentant heart it seemed what the church was doing was trying to make my friend regret what he had confessed to through works. I obviously don't understand it so please explain the idea is behind pentance. Thanks! EdB |

Hi EdB. This is just a note on your last email with regards to the confession and X amount of hail Marys. I think this is something often prcticed in Catholicism? I have always had a problem with this practice since first of all there is no mention in the bible that Mary has any authority to hear or answer prayers. It states is 1Tim 2:5 that there is no mediator between man and God except the son. As far as confession goes. It states in Mathew 6 that that it should be kept secret between man and God (again no mediator such as a priest) and infact in Mat 23:9 it says to call no one father except the father in heaven. This makes it hard to understand why the catholic religion would have their preists called father and also makes me wonder why they tell their members to confess to a priest at which point the priest (as far as i know) would give the person a certain amount of prayers to say and that his sins would be forgiven. A proest does not have the power to forgive sins. Only the father has this. There are many things i find confusing when it comes to the catholic religion and how they come about some of their beliefs but what i would sugest to you is. If you have questions that need answering then look in the bible. I belong to an evengelical free church after being raised a Catholic. What i liked most about the EFC is that if i needed answers my pastor would try and help but would always tell me to look for my self in the bible instead of takin his word for it. I can't say i personaly believe in purgatory. Therefore i don't believe in praying for someones sins once they are dead (ie last rights). It says in the bible that once your dead your dead. So sins need to be taken care of while your alive. This means as far as i see it. No Purgatory. I think there is something at the end of the old testament that talks of this but i will try and check i out for you. Hope i haven't gone on too much with this and no offence has been intended with the things i've said. God Bless Dylan |

Dylan I'm not Catholic and I'm not qualified to answer you statments. I believe Catholic confession and prayer of last rites is based on James 5:14-20. However my question to Emmaus was about pentance. I wasn't questioning the wording (hail mary) but rather the purpose. I think it best we wait until Emmaus responds before we discuss this much further. Thanks for your info. EdB |
