I will continue to assert that it was not part of the apostolic tradition, but rather a late addition. As far as Gregory of Tours, the sources on which he based his assertions were themselves condemned by Pope Gelasius in the late 5th century. If Gelasius' official pronouncements are infallible, then Gregory should have accepted them as such.
