1 | Men had multiple wives in the old test. | Matt 19:5 | yjj | 110639
Why does the bible speak about so many of our prophets having multiple wives and it says nothing about this being wrong. It is implied that men can have more than one wife. Example in Deuteronomy 21:15. All through the old testament it speaks of man having more than one wife like it is okay. I have a friend who believes that he can have more than one wife and I need some scripture and word of God to work with. Can anyone help.

It is recorded in the OT that men did many things. They worshiped idols, broke the Sabbath, dishonored their parents, lied, stole, coveted, and commited adultery, rape, incest and murder. But that doesn't make it OK to do those things. Because a thing is recorded in God's Word doesn't mean God condoned it. Because there is no record of certain individuals being punished for certain acts does not make those acts OK in God's sight. Sin is defined as the transgression of the Law. It is not defined as the transgression of some OT example, whether positive or negative. |

Good, yea excellent, post, Kalos. Even some acts in Scripture that were in obedience to God's commands are given, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we are commanded to emulate them. Noah built an ark and Moses a tabernacle, but that doesn't mean we should start collecting gopher wood for an ark or acacia wood for a tabernacle any more than that we men should collect as many wives as we possibly can. There is a verse in Paul's second letter to Timothy, well known but apparently poorly understood, which goes like this: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, ACCURATELY handling the word of truth." (2 Tim. 2:15). In three years on this Forum I have observed that many scriptural passages are called but few are chosen (to be accurately handled). --Hank
