AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 19:5 and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED INSEPARABLY TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'? [Gen 1:27; 2:24; Mark 10:7] |
Bible Question: I would like to know if a man can have more than one wife according to God's law. And if so why is this not considered adultery? |
Bible Answer: First, God tells us that TWO will become ONE flesh, not "two or more". This supports monogamy well. Also, in EPH 5, Jesus teaches us that marriage is akin to Christ and his relationship with the church. This can only support monogamy, sice there would have to be different religions to chose from otherwise. However, the most compelling answer is found in 1 Tim. This is where it specifically teaches us that elders (pastors, leaders, etc..) MUST have but one wife. Further reading leads to the conclusion that all relationships are to be monogomous.
