1 | When is abortion right? | Ex 21:23 | Hank | 74792
CDBJ: Verses 22 and 23 of Exodus 21 clearly stipulate that (v.22) "If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, YET NO HARM FOLLOWS, he shall surely be punished as the woman's husband imposes on him..." But IF ANY HARM FOLLOWS (v.23), then you shall give LIFE FOR LIFE." The passage doesn't say anything about whether the woman is in her first, second or third trimester of pregnancy. Says John MacArthur on p. 127 of the notes on this passage in his study Bible: "The principle of retaliation applied if injury did occur to either mother or child. The punishment matched, but did not exceed, the damage done to the victim. The welfare of a pregnant woman was protected by this law so that unintentional maltreatment constituted culpable negligence. Significantly for the abortion debate, THE FETUS WAS CONSIDERED A PERSON; thus, someone was held accountable for its death or injury." (Emphasis mine). Still unconvinced? --Hank
2 | When is abortion right? | Ex 21:23 | CDBJ | 74799
Hello Hank, I don't recall seeing to many miscarriages walking around. Exodus 21:22 "And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. The injury was to the woman according to sentence structure not to the miscarriage, if there was no other injury to the woman besides the problem of loosing the fetus. Love trumps knowledge, CDBJ |

3 | When is abortion right? | Ex 21:23 | Morant61 | 74848
Greetings CDBJ! I haven't read all of this thread, so forgive me if I repeat something which has already been said. Many translations of Ex. 21:22 use the term 'miscarriage' to translate the Hebrew terms. However, this is a major leap in logic. The Hebrew literally says, "so that her fruit comes forth without mischief". There isn't any indication in this verse that the 'fruit' died or was miscarried. The best choice seems to be to take the phrase to mean that the baby is born prematurely, yet without harm to the baby or the mother. This also makes better sense of the passage. An accident which causes a premature birth only results in a fine. However, if either mother or baby are harmed, then it is to be 'eye for eye'...'life for life'. This is a very strong passage demonstrating the value of even the unborn human life. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
