1 | "What did Jesus look like?" | Ex 20:4 | Vannessa | 56933
Hi ya, I'm new here, but I have a question please. I spend a lot of time at MTV.com, "fight for your rights" forum. I try to offer some alternative responses to the usual atheistic views. Yes quite challenging but I feel it's a worthy effort. One of the questions asked is: "What did Jesus look like?" It seems I remember studies show that Jesus was of a fairly dark complexion but looked basically very average. Please let me know if you have any scriptural references regarding Jesus' physical appearance or any other studies done regarding this question. Thank you for your help. V |

2 | "What did Jesus look like?" | Ex 20:4 | J.Wishart | 56934
Exodus 20:4 - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Exodus 20:5 - Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them.... God the Father, the son, and the Holy spirit gave us the 10 commandments in the old testament. I believe that we are not to know what Jesus looked like in his human form. Because we do not know what he looked like we would have to guess what he looked like and this would most definently be an incorrect image and thus a GRAVEN image of Our lord Jesus. Some Presbiterian churches around Australia are now getting rid of stained glass windows depicting jesus. Getting rid of crosses which are a symbol to us of god thus a graven image. And a multitude of other things as well. If we were to know what jesus looked like we would all have somethings to judge. Some would think he looked proud, strong and others would see him as kind and gentle, and others would see him as frail and weak. As you know we can be friends with someone for years and still not know what they are like, what their expectations are and what they actually feel about everything. Image is a majour part of how we judge a person and if we were to be given an image of jesus we would most definently judge him... Just look at what happend when our God Send down his beloved Son the first time. He was persecuted. And jesus most probably had the most perfect body language, tone of voice etc. that has ever been present on this earth. We are to obey gods commandments and live how he wants us to live and worship the lord our God with all our heart and all our minds not a picture that we have made up.... This is why we will probably never know what jesus looked like...(Untill the end of this world...) I know this doesn't give you any details of what jesus looked like but I Pray that this answer has given you an answer as to why you cant find any details of what jesus looked like... |

Thank you for your in-depth explanation, I tend to agree with why there are not more details of the physical appearance of Jesus. Unfortunately when conversing with minors your explanation tends to lose a bit of impact and would probably be scoffed at. The age group I generally converse with regarding questions surrounding Jesus, the Bible, God, etc. are very direct and insist on a very direct answer. I appreciate your efforts. However, I think they will only refer to this as a "cop out" attempt to excuse not knowing what Jesus looked like, especially when we can see the very details of far away planets using today's technology. I do tend to agree with your answer but unfortunately it may not hold water in the teenage world, of course that's just speculating. Just some thoughts, And again thank you for your time. V |

Hi, V; A simple, direct answer is that nobody knows what Jesus looked like. There are no contemporanious images of Socrates either, for example. But you have piqued my curiosity. I know that teens can be obsessive about appearance, but I can't imagine why they would insist on knowing what anyone who lived 2000 years ago looked like. Why do they want to know? Steve that's such a good question, sorry to be so late responding. I think they only want to place some kind of physical value with the idea of Jesus. Perhaps as they judge their own appearance so critically, they want to be able to judge Jesus' as well. Plus they may want to place Jesus with some kind ethnic features so they can stereotype Him. Teens tend to place everyone into a specific category of box, if you will. It makes it easier to judge them that way. I suppose as others have suggested that is why Jesus was somewhat nondescript except for being Jewish. Thank you for the question, very interesting, V |
