Whew, Val... if God is not providentially in control of the very last molecule in the universe, I'd question that He was God at all. Furthermore, if He isn't in control, then He'd never be able to make a promise... He'd only be able to express His hopes! One of the cool things about being part of a confessional church, is that so many of these simple questions about God have already been summarized from Scripture. Our confessions are not infallible or inspired as is the Word, but they draw their authority from Scripture alone (sola Scriptura). "Nothing happens by chance or outside the sphere of God's providence. As God is the First Cause of all events, they happen immutably and infallibly according to His foreknowledge and decree, to which they stand related. Yet by His providence God so controls them, that second causes, operating either as fixed laws, or freely, or in dependence upon other causes, play their part in bringing them about. (Genesis 8:22; Proverbs 16:33; Acts 2:23)" --London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 (chapter 5, paragraph 2) Yes, Val, we live in a fallen world... but we have a God who is sovereign even over fallen worlds! There is not one single thing that can happen to a believer that God does not carefully choreograph for His glory and the believer's ultimate good (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 119:71; Romans 8:28). Dear Val, Exposing the lie for what it is -- i.e., correcting people's false doctrine -- and presenting the truth is one of the most loving things that we can do! That is particularly true in this association. The forum, is, after all, limitted in the extent to which we can minister to one another. How better to show our love for one another than to share the truth of God with one another? (Titus 2:1) See, I might assert that two plus two is four. Someone might disagree. I would then carefully show them the proof of the sum of two and two. When faced with the logic, it makes no sense for them to say, "Well, two plus two is not loving!" Think about it. Do I show my love by leaving them in ignorance, allowing them to promulgate an untruth, or do I demonstrate my love for them -- and for my precious Savior -- by teaching them sound doctrine? (2 Timothy 4:2) Well, if the "love in my voice" is not evident, perhaps the manifest love of the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon, will be heard with greater clarity: "There are many ministers, nowadays, who think that they must shift their doctrinal landmarks, and there are others who have no landmarks at all. They believe something, or everything, or nothing -- it is difficult to tell which; and their common cry is, 'We must be charitable [loving].' I have known many people who were willing to be charitable with other people's money, and I have known others who are charitable with doctrines that are not theirs to give away, for they are Christ's doctrines; but these supposed custodians of them care so little for them that they offer to give them away in any quantity. But a faithful steward of Christ's will not do so; he who loves Christ, and wishes to honor Him, keeps Christ's words, and treasures them up." Or perhaps the words of Paul... I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. Val - What's your point, please? How is your response about Calvinism's doctrines related to Doc's post 190980? I frankly don't get it. It strikes me as a classical non sequitur. Can you help me out of the dilemma into which I seem to have fallen? ...... And, in regard to your remark about hearing no love in Doc's voice, Val. If you knew Doc the way I know Doc, I don't believe you would ever say such a thing about this Christian brother. --Hank | ||||||
