1 | Am I ignorant | 1 Cor 12:1 | mark d seyler | 211151
Hi Jeff, I was more responding to my perception of your desire to have and do what was right in God's eyes. If I've added anything, praise God for that, If I've confused, you can be sure that was entirely from me! Love in Christ, Mark |

2 | Am I ignorant | 1 Cor 12:1 | mark d seyler | 211146
Hi Jeff, I'm certain you already know these things, so I'll just give them by way of reminder . . . "Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various) kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way." 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 In this discussion of spiritual gifts, Paul speaks about the desire for these gifts, setting them in order, and encouraging the reader to "earnestly desire the greater gifts. And to me, that goes to the heart of this discussion. Should we want these things? Are they things that God wants for us? I want to want what God wants, and not what He doesn't. Paul supersedes that in the next passage: "If I . . . and have not love . . ." Its ok to want the greater gifts. Its better to simply love the body of Christ. And by love, I mean "sacrificial devotion to another's well-being", which is my understanding of "agape". I believe that as I am committed and devoted to serve you and help you in any way that I can, God will empower me to perform whatever works He wants me to do, including teaching supernaturally, giving, leading, healing, prophesying, and anything else. Its no accident that in each of the places that speak of the spiritual gifts, Scripture also speaks of humility, and servitude, and building up the body of Christ. I think its much more important to be concerned with how we can serve others than to be concerned with how God will make it happen. I can be open to whatever God wants to do. And in 1 Corinthians, and Romans, we find a number of those things named. And I find numerous assurances in Scripture that if I'm seeking to receive from God, He won't give me something bad. I've learned to trust Him to take care of me. Love in Christ, Mark |

3 | Am I ignorant | 1 Cor 12:1 | mark d seyler | 211131
Hi Tim! (Yes, I still lurk every great once in a while - I had to think a moment to remember how to post!) And once again, I find your posts sound, and refreshing! Of course no one will ever present a verse showing that spiritual gifts have ceased. We can only find verses that speak of believers having them. I wonder, though, that its not the gifts that have ceased, rather, that it may be the faith, commitment, and submission that have ceased. And how many of us have spiritual gifts, and think these things are our own abilities and talents? How many of us have spiritual gifts, and have never had the faith, or willingness to use them? Paul wrote to Timothy to awaken his gift. Are there any to whom this may apply today? God bless you my friend! Love in Christ, Mark |

4 | Christian internet provider? | 1 Thess 4:5 | mark d seyler | 201561
Hi Justme, I recommend Integrity.com. They have a number of options available, including filters, and dial-up service. You can also set your homepage to this site, so that this is what you see when you open your internet browser. 1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it." 5 | Tithing, Giving, Itemizing | Rom 13:1 | mark d seyler | 199832
Hi Cheri, I'd like to just add, it's not that you'd be giving less, its that you'd be paying less taxes, a totally separate issue in my mind. Jesus said give to caeser what is caeser's, so if you are fulfilling the legal requirements of what to pay, why pay more? Paul said of a slave, don't be concerned about your slavery, but if you can become free, then do that. (1 Cor 7:21 Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.) So then Paul acknowledges the desirablity of an unfettered legal status. For me, this is a guiding principle in these sorts of decisions. I can give to caeser what belongs to him, according to his rules, and keep the rest to be used, hopefully, to the glory of God. So this is just my opinion - the beauty is, we are all to give according to what we've decided in our hearts, and you understand that, so you'll do just fine, whatever you choose to do. Hi Derowr, I notice you present the Hopi writings on your website. On this forum we adhere strictly to the Bible as the only authoratative declraration of God's revelation to man of Himself. And it is to that God, the God of the Bible, that I pledge myself. Love in Christ, Mark |

9 | Is a person that is not born again pers | Mark 2:1 | mark d seyler | 192232
Hi! Don't worry to much about it. I don't think its actually in the terms of use to not list a website, that is, unless you are trying to sell something, which I don't see that your website is doing. And while, I guess, some appear to consider it "poor form", there are many Bible forums that include links to poster's websites on each post, so not everyone thinks that way. But since some seem to be sensitive about this, I'd agree that its best to put it in your profile. And welcome to the forum! love in Christ, Mark |

10 | Abstaining from things strangled, blood? | Acts 15:20 | mark d seyler | 192144
Hi WOS, I think you have the essence of what is being said. James gives as his reason for instructing this that its because Moses is read every sabbath, in every city. This law was so deeply ingrained in the Jews, and as Doc wrote, how could it not be an offense? That's how they grew up, in all their generations. I think you are right on target. 11 | IS ELOHEIM JESUS? | Ex 24:10 | mark d seyler | 191799
Hi Rabban, I see what you are saying. Thank you for the clarification. Love in Christ, Mark |

12 | IS ELOHEIM JESUS? | Ex 24:10 | mark d seyler | 191792
Hi Rabban, I would like to offer a small correction, that YHWH would not be interchangable with "Elohim" in all instances, an example would be: Deu 28:64 And YHWH shall scatter you among all people, from one end of the earth even to the other, and you shall serve other elohim there, wood and stone, which you have not known, nor your fathers. . . . or . . . Jdg 3:6 And they took their daughters to themselves for wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and they served their elohim. So while YHWH is exclusively used of the Living God, "elohim" is also used of others. Love in Christ, Mark |

13 | is there importance to the two woman boi | Ex 24:10 | mark d seyler | 191788
Leviticus 26:27-29 (27) If you will not listen to Me for this, and shall walk contrary to Me, (28) then I also will walk contrary to you in fury. I also will chastise you, I also, seven times for your sins. (29) And you shall eat of the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat of the flesh of your daughters. This was given as a result of Israel's disobedience, and so here in 2 Kings 6:29 "And we boiled my son and ate him, and I said to her on the next day, Give your son, that we may eat him. But she hid her son," we see the fulfillment of this. Love in Christ, Mark |

15 | Sin during chasening? | Rom 5:8 | mark d seyler | 191773
Hi LJ777, Romans 5:7-11 (7) For with difficulty one will die for a just one, (for perhaps one even dares to die for the sake of the good one), (8) but God commends His love to us in this, that we being yet sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Much more then, being justified now by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath through Him. (10) For if while being enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life; (11) and not only so, but also glorying in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we now received the reconciliation. God chastises every son, and that doesn't change. Continued sin may bring continued chastisement, and it may be grievous indeed. Jesus died for us when we were dead in sin. Now, being alive in Christ, God will most surely sanctify us. Love in Christ, Mark |

16 | Who was God addressing in seven churches | Rev 2:1 | mark d seyler | 191771
HI jlowe, Great question! Rev 2:1 "To the angel of the Ephesian assembly, write . . . " While we generally think of "angel" as a non-human spirit-being, the words simply means, "messenger". It is used of humans in James 2:25, referring to the spies that entered Jericho. To the Ephesian messenger, Jesus says, "you have left your first love." The the Smyrnan messenger, "don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer." I think that these angels, or messengers, are those individuals that bring God's message to those individual churches, what we would think of now as the pastor. I think that the first letter may have been given to Timothy in Ephesus, the second to Polycarp in Smyrna, and so on. Of course, we know that these letters are also intended for the people in those churches themselves (he who has an ear let him hear), and to all churches (what the Spirit says to the churches). But they are first addressed to that person whom God refers to as "the messenger", and I see that as indicative of our responsibility towards those whom God has placed in our care. I hope this helps! 18 | Interpreting Revelation | Revelation | mark d seyler | 190465
Ezekiel 43:6-11 (6) And I heard one speaking to me from the house. And standing beside me was a Man. (7) And He said to me, Son of man, the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, there where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever, even the house of Israel shall not defile My holy name any more, they nor their kings, by their fornication, nor by the corpses of their kings in their high places. (8) In their setting of their threshold by My threshold, and their door post beside My door post, and the wall between Me and them, even they have defiled My holy name by their abominations that they have done. And I consumed them in My anger. (9) Now let them put away their fornication and the corpses of their kings from Me, and I will dwell in their midst forever. (10) You, son of man, declare to the house of Israel, the temple house, and they will blush from their iniquities. And let them measure its size. (11) And if they are ashamed of all that they have done, the form of the house, and its arrangement, and its exits, and its entrances, and all its forms, and all its statutes, and all its forms, and all its laws, make them known to them. And write them in their sight, so that they may observe all its form, and all its statutes, and do them. Hi Cheri, This, to me, is the key passage to these chapters. Ezekiel is to declare to Israel the temple God wants them to build, and if Israel is ashamed of all they have done, then they are to fulfill this commandment for the temple, and God will dwell in their midst. So Ezekiel declared this prophecy to them in the Babylonian captivity. But they did not do this, and we still look for the day in which it will happen. Many expect this temple to be built in the millenial kingdom. I'm one of those :-) Does this help? Love in Christ, Mark |

19 | Why the NKJV over the NASB ? | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 189798
Good morning, Hank, I'd just like to add to your words my appreciation for the NASB's adherence to the Greek word order, doubtless a contributor to the criticisms against it. Since Greek used word order to show emphasis, I greatly appreciate that this translation maintains the word order, even at the expense of the "smooth reading" of the English translation. But in this way I can know all the better what God has written, and what higher calling can there be for a translation than that? Love in Christ, Mark |

20 | when a I saved and when baptised | Rom 10:9 | mark d seyler | 189715
Hi AO, I'd like to make mention here that not all of these passages you are citing are speaking of water baptism. If we translate instead of transliterate I think this is more clearly seen, for instance: Galatians 3:26-27 27 For all of you who were immersed into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13 13 For by one Spirit we were all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. You wrote: "Since baptism by the Holy Spirit was only for the Apostles and the first gentiles. . ." What exactly do you mean by "baptism by the Holy Spirit"? This isn't an expression which I find used in the Bible. Love in Christ, Mark |
