1 | The Bible Definition of a soul is what? | Bible general Archive 1 | prazn | 85418
Lev 17:10-11 11'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; NAS Before Christ, man made atonement for his sins by sacrificing animals. This verse uses the word "soul" rather than "sin". This could be because it is with our soul that we sin against God. We sin against God by being disobedient to His will for our lives. How do we disobey God? By following our own way, rather than His. That means that we make a "conscious" choice to disobey the Lord. To make a conscious choice we must have thought about our actions; experienced certain emotions about our actions; and decided to disobey. So, we can conclude that we reason with our soul; we feel emotions with our soul; and we decide with our soul. So, the soul is our intellect, emotions and will. Gen 35:16-20 16 Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she suffered severe labor. 17 And it came about when she was in severe labor that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear, for now you have another son." 18 And it came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day. NAS This verse indicates that the soul leaves the body at death. Luke 16:19-17:1 19 "Now there was a certain rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, gaily living in splendor every day. 20 "And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22 "Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 "And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.' 25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' 27 "And he said, 'Then I beg you, Father, that you send him to my father's house-- 28 for I have five brothers-- that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' 29 "But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' 30 "But he said, 'No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!' 31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'" NAS Jesus told this parable to the pharisees during His time on earth. In it, He mentions only two realms; heaven and hell. There are no verses in the NASB (or any other commonly used Bible translation) that contain the words "purgatory", "hereafter" or "reincarnation". Nor are any references to these spiritual realms addressed within the Bible. Jesus was resurrected. |

Do Good People Really Go to Heaven When They Die? Most churchgoers believe that when they die they will go to heaven. But will they? If heaven truly is a place of such everlasting happiness, why do so many do all they can to postpone going there? The Bible reveals some astounding and little-understood truths about heaven, the mystery of life beyond the grave and God’s great plan and purpose for us. To comprehend what the Bible teaches about heaven, we first need to understand that there is more than one heaven. Often the Bible refers to heavens, plural. In fact, three distinct “heavens” are mentioned in the Bible. The first of these is simply the sky above us—earth’s atmosphere, containing the air we breathe. It is in this heaven that birds fly and clouds give rain and snow (2 Samuel 21:10; Job 35:11; Isaiah 55:10). The second biblical heaven is the realm beyond earth’s atmosphere, what we commonly call outer space. Here we find the Obviously the deceased, Christian or not, are not floating around unnoticed in the first two heavens. No one seriously believes they can be found drifting about the sky or in outer space. Therefore they must be in the third of these heavens, right? Many people assume so, but the whole argument about heaven being the reward of deceased Christians runs into a brick wall with these words from the apostle Peter’s first sermon: “Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day . . . For David did not ascend to heaven . . .” (Acts 2:29, 34, David off to heaven. The only one who had ascended to heaven, said Peter, was Jesus Christ (Acts 2:29-35). Was Peter mistaken? Did he simply misspeak? We might assume so, but notice what the Gospel of John says: “No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man [Jesus Christ]” (John 3:13, NIV). Jesus never promised Christians heaven after they died. The New Testament plainly says that of the faithful men and women who had gone before—such spiritual giants as Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses, to name some of those listed in Hebrews 11—not one has ascended to heaven. In fact, says verse 39 of Hebrews 11, “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised” (NIV). If they aren’t in heaven, where are they? And what was it they were promised, if it wasn’t heaven? |

3 | No, the dead are still DEAD...not alive! | Bible general Archive 1 | Mathew | 85436
Goodnewsminister, I agree with you on this point, I beleive that Wheat and Tares all await there promiss at the resurrection. I also beleive that the body without the breath of life is dead. There is no immortal soul. And only God is Spirit. People who beleive in Christians going to heaven at death must also beleive that animals go to heaven or hell at death also. Since both have the breath of life, and both have souls. Matt |

Greetings Matt: you wrote, "There is no immortal soul." Can you please explain what you mean here? What is the "breath of life?" Are you differentiating between soul and spirit? Yes, only God is Spirit, but each person possesses a spirit, capable of relating to the Lord God our Creator. See Rev 20:12-15. According to God's Word, man is an immortal being. Where he spends eternity is up to him. The Apostle Paul expressed what all Christians hope(this is not wishful thinking, but CONFIDENT EXPECTATION) "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." (Please read 2 Cor 5:1-8) Jesus also assured that where He is, there we (Christ followers) will be also. (John 14:1-6) What do you believe will happen to you when your body dies? Sincerely, mommapbs |

mommapbs, I beleive that all Christians have a Spirit. But I beleive that it is the Spirit of God that dwells in us. I do beleive that God will never leave us or forsake us, and that he is the God of the living and not the dead. But I dont call Christians that are SLEEPING dead either. I simply say they have entered into the Lords rest. I don't beleive in a consciouse state of being when a person is sleeping. But that doesn't mean that they are dead. Matt |

SO, what do you believe will happen to you when your body dies? As for me, Christians who are sleeping are those who have become complacent in their relationship with the Lord - not conscious of His abiding presence. And, I don't believe that the Lord's rest is a place to sleep either! I believe that we will be fully aware of His presence at the instant of physical death - we will not be alseep in Him but fully awake! Note that in the story of the Rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16) - one was well aware of his torment and the other was comforted. Our physical bodies may "sleep" in the grave until they are changed.
