Dear Ed, Thank you for your well reasoned response. The bible says that we battle not against flesh and blood but against wicked spiritual forces. We also know that our enemy is a defeated foe. Our war was won at Calvery by our king who even now is using this earth as His footstool. Therefore the war (for all intents and puposes) is already won and we are now engaged in a mop-up operation. Jesus said: "...I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it." (Matt 16:18) These cults and false religions (as well as agnostics and atheists) are hunkered down behind these gates of Hell. They want no part of the kingdom of God. But we have orders from our king to tear down those gates. Now, He does not expect us to accomplish this through carnal weapons but with the spiritual power that is the gospel itself! We just keep on preachin' it. Sometimes we will see immediate results, but most of the time we dont't see those hairline fractures that are forming in that big, ugly and intimidating gate. Then one day a little foolish christian comes along and gives em the gospel one more time and BOOM!!! It collapses like a house of cards and a wave of evangelistic fervor sweeps the world as multitudes are saved on the left and on the right. A Bona Fide act of God! In the meantime we just keep pounding away at it. John |

John Your right it is a spiritual battle. One fought in the spirit realm not in the physical. Prayer is far more effective against these cultist than all our learned words. However there are many that have no cultic leanings that need to hear the word. Haven't I been saying that? EdB |

Dear Ed, What I have been stressing is the gospel. They need the power of the gospel to overthrow their bondage. Yes, prayer is essential as well as is a holy life. But the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. John |

John I'm not denying the power of the gospel. I'm saying the average cultist that will visit your door will probably know the scriptures you are going to give them, be better versed in their cultic understanding of them than you are in the orthodox understanding and will have rehearsed responses to your usage of those scriptures. Look at the exchange between Satan and Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus did not the dialogue move to anything but the word of God. There was no comparison between what he knew was true and what Satan was saying. In fact there was little dialogue. I suggest if your going to "witness" to a cultist you need to remain at that level. If you are going to dialogue your time would be better spent on a none cultist. EdB |

In my experience in attempting to communicate with members of two particularly well-known cults in America, I've been the one considered the lost sheep, the errant one, the prodigal son. It is I, who think of my theological bent as orthodox, who is the object of their missionary efforts. So conditioned by their cult have they become, and so zealous in spreading their concept of the truth, that they don't actually listen to what I have to say or even to what the Bible has to say; they listen with a singular objective in mind, and that is to refute the plain truth of the Bible by superimposing their cult teaching upon it. It is not a great deal different from holding a conversation with a dead tree stump. So, Ed, I concur easily with you in your conclusion that, by and large at least, it would be more productive to talk with someone who professes no faith than with someone who has been sucked in by a cult. This is not to say that cult members should be excluded from Christian missionary efforts or considered a totally lost cause. But witnessing effectively to cults is, I believe, a special kind of witness that demands special skills in which most Christians perhaps should be, but are not, trained. --Hank | ||||||
