Hi CDBJ A few questions for clarification. Why would it have been necessary, and of the utmost importance for Paul, and Peter to have these things understood by the Thessalonians? Were they at the center of the universe, as far as the Christendom was concerned? My point is, why is it so important for "them" to know just how these things are going to take place, if it is "US" who these things will be happening to? Both Paul, and Peter "neglect" to tell the Thessalonians, that these things are not for them personally, but for us 2000 yrs. in the future. Wouldn't that be instilling fear in the hearts of men? But then on the other hand, Jesus Himself did say in. Matt.24:34 Verily I say unto you, (This generation) shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. brackets are mine If these things are for us then why wouldn't there have been a prophesy to us (the church) the same as Daniel was to the Jews. Hi, Vintage... Doesn't Paul, in the epistles themselves, say what his purpose in writing was? With regard to "instilling fear" ... given the stated purpose of the epistles -- generally and in particular regarding the doctrines themselves -- wouldn't that belay that question? Perhaps we should read the whole of the epistles specifically with the attitude that the intended purpose was comfort. Paul knew the Thessalonian believers specifically and culturally -- and in chronological context. Nothing in Scripture ever means something other than what it meant when it was penned. In Him, Doc PS So, when are you going to let me give you a book? I've never known a serious Bible student who wouldn't accept a free, scholarly book on the Scriptures. Of course, maybe that's the penny pincher in me. |

Hi Doc Then you have in your own inimitable fashion, answered in one fell swoop, all of the different beliefs about the rapture, when you say. "Nothing in Scripture ever means something other than what it meant when it was penned." Do you mean like this? Matt.24:34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. This truly of His then, really was a truly? Not a maybe these things will happen before this generation pass away. This verse should be kept within the context of the whole chapter though. Thanks for the clarification. Vintage68 |

Hi, Vintage... Fell swoops and all, any interpretation of Scripture outside of a grammatical, historical context is the root cause of more error than you can shake a stick at! I will not be miserly with answers, therefore: You asked, "Do you mean like this?" Yes I do. Absolutely. ("May God be true and every man a liar.") You asked, "This truly of His then, really was a truly?" (sic) I am sorry, I do not understand this question. If you are asking me, am I able to explain how it was grammatically and historically true, I would answer, yes -- but to a limited degree. I am certainly not persuaded by the dispensational, prophecy mongering that is so popular in many circles today. However, I am also not persuaded by the preterist interpretations. I had a professor once who said, "When you find yourself out in the river, where the water is getting too deep to make touching the bottom easily, come on back closer to shore." The old, historic Baptist divines said it this way, "All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all; yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of ordinary means, may attain to a sufficient understanding of them. (2 Peter 3:16; Psalms 19:7; Psalms 119:130)" --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (chapter 1, paragraph 7) In Him, Doc PS You'd really enjoy that book, buddy! |
