1 | Is baptism done only once? | Eph 4:5 | Reformer Joe | 42457
You wrote: 'The Word of God doesn't say "that the baptism of the Holy Spirit occurs at the moment of salvation".' My "non-trick" Bible shows me: "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory." --Ephesians 1:13-14 and "Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." --Acts 2:38 and "and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." --Romans 5:5 (see context; Holy Spirit connected to justification) and "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God" --1 Corinthians 2:12 (note that it is the "carnal" Corinthians who have received the Spirit already) The fact is that Scripture plainly teaches that all who hear and truly receive the message of God's grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone are baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will find nothing in Scripture or in church history that hints at a "second blessing." So it is what YOU believe that is out of line with both Scripture and the way God has operated though his church for 2000 years. --Joe! |

Praise the Lord! You don't have a trick bible. However, read Acts 19:1-6. Once again I say no one receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit at salvation. You are right, it is what "I" believe. I didn't write the bible, He did. I just beleve what He writes. It's not that complicated. Blessings to you, Jesus es la Luz |

3 | Is baptism done only once? | Eph 4:5 | Reformer Joe | 42709
Acts 19 is a case of those who had received John's baptism of repentance, but had not believed in Christ yet. Notice the water baptism, signaling that they had joined the church. It was at that point that they received the Holy Spirit. Now look at all the other examples of post-Penetcost conversions. After Penetcost, ALL of them receive the Spirit upon conversion. You can say "no one receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit at salvation." And I will continue to point out that that view is a 20th-century novelty that has no basis in Scripture. --Joe! |

4 | Is baptism done only once? | Eph 4:5 | RAVEN | 42735
Hello Joe, And I will continue to point out where you are in error. First, because the people of Acts 19 were baptised, this does not signal the joining of the church. The act of baptism is the culminating act of faith by believing in Jesus Christ where upon we receive remission of our sins. Acts 2:47 says the Lord adds to the church. Man does not join the church. Second, as for all post-Pentacost conversions receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, you need to read the account of Philip and the Eunuch in Acts 8:34-39. Its says that the eunuch went away rejoicing but never says he received the Holy Spirit. These gifts where given out at the discreation of the Apostles who were proclaiming Gods word and had the gifts themselves. Also look at Simon, he also never received the gifts, for after he was baptied he continued with Philip and seeing all the miracles and signs he tried to buy with money. Read on and see what he was told: Acts 8 13Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done. The Sorcerer's Sin 14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, HE OFFERED THEM MONEY, 19saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit." 20But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity." 24Then Simon answered and said, "Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me." Hello Raven You've certainly backed yourself into a corner this time. I acknowledge this was an interim time where God worked in stages, but there are truths in these passages that are concrete. Your argument from silence that the eunuch did not receive the Holy Spirit is preposterous. Eph 1:13-14 convinces me that he did. If the eunuch did not receive the Spirit, he died in his sins. Not much to rejoice over. The apostles never passed out gifts of their own discretion. Gifts are given by the Holy Spirit Himself (1 Cor 12). Simon tried to buy apostolic power. That was a gross error. It does not necessarily mean he had not received the Holy Spirit. Steve |
