1 | Receiving and accepting spiritual things | 1 Cor 2:14 | Ray | 60233
The NKJ in lieu of "accept" the things of the Spirit of God, reads, "But the natural man does not RECEIVE the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." By using the word receive, it suggests to me, referring back to verse 12, where it talks about receiving not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit [spirit] from God. For verses 12 and 14 I have penciled in my personal copy "spirit" for both verses. I do this because I believe that they are talking about the gift rather than the Giver. This goes along with my belief that we are to be filled with the "holy spirit"; but we are indwelt by God Himself at conversion. The Spirit Himself came upon Jesus but Jesus also was filled with the holy spirit. From the heart, Ray |

2 | Receiving and accepting spiritual things | 1 Cor 2:14 | Mommapbs | 60946
Greetings Ray! Just wondering about this. As a believer, in our flesh we still must live with the "natural man". Now, If we choose to allow the natural man to reign, we cannot discern or understand the deep things of the Spirit of God which have been given to us. But when we are yeilded to the control of the Lord, allowing the indwelling Holy Spirit to be at work in our eartly bodies, then we will preceive spiritual things. I suspect that because there is a struggle within, we wrestle with one another on issues that are only Spiritually discerned. What do you think? Blessings of the peace of His presence on your day. Hi Mommapbs, I agree with all that you have said. I agree with all that I hear and all that I see in your capitalization. As far as things being Spiritually discerned, we do not have the mind of God that we can instruct Him. No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. In my problems with spiritually discerning the things of John 4, for instance, it is a problem with the spirit of the words on the printed page. For I spiritually discern or appraise, while only God can Spiritually discern. We can only speak the things that the Spirit has taught us. 1 Corinthians 2:12, "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from (God), that we might KNOW THE THINGS FREELY GIVEN to us by God, which things we speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual [thoughts] with spiritual [words]. As far as the "natural man" this Scripture came to mind. 2 Corinthians 5:16, "Therefore from now on we recognize no man according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet we know Him [thus, in this way] no longer. Therefore, if any man [anyone] is in (Christ), he is a new creature [or, there is a new creation]; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all THESE THINGS ARE FROM God,..." 2 Corinthians 3:4, "And such confidence we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, nor of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." But I think, believe, discern (even though I seek to be consistent in capitalization), that the Spirit gives life and also the spirit gives life. John 6:62, "What then if you should behold the Son of (Man) ascending where He was before? It is the *spirit [who, which] gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." John 3:34, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of (God); for He gives the *spirit without measure." He gives the spirit; He speaks the words that are spirit and life. All THESE THINGS are from God. From the heart, Ray |
