1 | What makes me unworthy of Lords Sup.? | 1 Cor 11:27 | Reformer Joe | 63041
Searcher: You wrote: "First, no where does it say baptism is a requirement to partake of the Lord's Supper ... one needs to be a Christian." Not that baptism makes one a Christian, but I would say that it is the visible sign and seal of being united to the visible church. Why would one partake in a holy ordinance testifying to one's union with Christ without first being a participant in water baptism? I do not believe in baptismal regeneration by any means, but the "take-it-or-leave-it" attitude toward water baptism for the Christian has absolutely no basis in Scripture. New Testament Christians were baptized Christians. The issue wasn't mentioned because there was no issue to mention. --Joe! |

2 | Joe, baptism required for Lord's Supper? | 1 Cor 11:27 | Searcher56 | 63063
Joe, are you saying a Christian who has not been baptized, should not partake of the Lord's Supper? ... or even forbidden?
3 | Joe, baptism required for Lord's Supper? | 1 Cor 11:27 | Reformer Joe | 63075
I think the first thing that someone professing faith in Jesus Christ should do is be baptized. The fact that there is such a concept as a "Christian who has not been baptized" is a sign of how little we regard the ordinances which Christ established and commanded to mark His people as His own. Baptism should precede partaking of the Lord's Supper; and my question for anyone who professes faith in Jesus Christ and wants to partake of the Supper will be "Why haven't you been baptized?" That having been said, I do not believe that is what Paul was writing to the Corinthians about. --Joe! |

4 | Joe, baptism required for Lord's Supper? | 1 Cor 11:27 | Searcher56 | 63082
Scripture ... Acts 2:38-41, 8:12-17, 8:36-28, 9:18 (22:16), 10:47-48, 16:14-15, 16:31-33, 19:1-5; 1 Cor 1:14-17 ... Joe, It appears that baptism occured right away in the accounts of Acts. While Paul rarely baptized (1 Cor 1:14-17), I'd think someone else did it, right away. Many churches want to wait until the person understands what baptism is, before they'll baptize. They may let them partake of the Lord's Supper before they are baptized. While I don't understand why churches do it this way, it is a minor doctrinal difference. I wouldn't push it. Searcher |

5 | Joe, baptism required for Lord's Supper? | 1 Cor 11:27 | Hank | 63085
Searcher, it seems odd indeed that church leaders would permit a new believer access to the Lord's table while at the same time causing him to go through a "probationary" period before allowing him to be baptized. I wonder how they presume to know that the new believer "automatically" understands all about holy communion but must be tutored on water baptism? Leaders of such a church would be hard pressed to justify their actions by scriptural example. --Hank
