1 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | ominous | 157589
I read that the jewish nation plans to rebuild Solomon's Temple.Though they are having problems deciding on an exact location, they intend to build it some where in Jerusalem, if not in the original location. This would cause turmoil in the middle east (as if there isn't enough already!) as opposing nations all try to stake their claim of the Holy Land. since the Temple was a symbol of God's peace, and he allowed it to be destroyed as a sign that there would be no peace concerning that region until the return of his Son to rule in righteousness, this temple is the will of man and not God! Is it possible then that this is what Christ spake of in matthew 24:15 "The Abomination of Desolation?"
2 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | kalos | 157590
What is the abomination of desolation? 'Answer: Matthew 24:15, “So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel - let the reader understand.” This Scripture is referring to Daniel 9:27, “He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” In 167 B.C. a Greek ruler by the name of Antiochus Epiphanies set up an altar to Zeus over the altar of burnt offerings in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. He also sacrificed a pig on the altar in the Temple in Jerusalem. This event is known as the “abomination of desolation.” 'Jesus, in Matthew 25:15, was speaking some 200 years after the abomination of desolation had already occurred. So, Jesus must have been prophesying that some time in the future the abomination of desolation would reoccur in a Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Most Bible prophesy interpreters believe that Jesus was referring to the antichrist, who will do something very similar to what Antiochus Epiphanies did. This is confirmed by the fact that some of what Daniel prophesied in Daniel 9:27 did not occur in 167 B.C. with Antiochus Epiphanies. Antiochus did not confirm a covenant with Israel for seven years. It is the antichrist who in the end times will establish a covenant with Israel for seven years and then break it by doing something similar to the abomination of desolation in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.' www.gotquestions.org/abomination-desolation.html * * * * * * * * * * * * * For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. 2 Tim 4:3a NIV |

3 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | ominous | 157600
thanks for the response kalos, aside from the opinions of interpreters, isnt it plausible that the antichrist is not necessarily one man but a nation or power structure? or even a system? as when stated in revelations 1316-17 that those who would not recieve the mark... now to have a "mark" in your forehead or right hand could this not symbolize concurrence with, or support of a system, or philsophy? as in your forehead could mean, to "believe" and right hand, to "uphold"? i know there are many folds to the scriptures, as things tend to cycle back around as said in ecclesiastes 1:9 "the thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun." also note that it says in revelations 13:18, " let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man," does not necessarily mean an individual man, as the number six also signifies the day in which man was made. no contention, just curiousity; as i have always been one to seek, and not follow. oominous.
4 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | mark d seyler | 157606
Hi Ominous, I just have this 2-part question to ask you: If Biblical teachings that are presented as factual information are actually symbolic, or allegorical, or otherwise not literal fact, what is your evidence that they are in fact symbolic, or allegorical, or otherwise not literal fact? If there is no textual evidence that they are symbolic, or anything other than literal fact, then who is it that decides? Love in Christ, Mark |

5 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | ominous | 157650
well, not all biblical writings are allegorical; but many of them are. the red dragon in revelations, and the beasts in daniel, are all allegorical representations of future events! empires to be exact! Christ himself taught in parables to the masses. and who is it as you say, that presents it as factual information? is it not yourselves? as i have said, and grow weary of saying; i only asked a question! to get feed back, not patronized.
6 | What is the abomination of desolation? | Matt 24:15 | mark d seyler | 157672
Hi Ominous, I did not intend to be patronizing, but instead to just point to the text. The beast will cause all to receive a mark in their hand or forehead. This is stated as narative fact, and should not be looked at as anything other than plain and simple fact. On the other hand, when the Bible says things like "I say a great sign in heaven, a fiery red dragon..." we can know that this now is a 'sign', or symbol, of something else. These symbols are always explained - the seven heads are seven kings - so that we do not have to try to figure out what they mean. Any time the Bible is interpreted as symbolic, you must must have textual evidence not only that it is symbolic, but also what that symbol means. In this case, no, the text does not support anything other than that the beast is a man, who will give a literal mark, and that those who recieve the mark will share in the devil's punishment.
