"Avoid spiritualizing or allegorizing the Bible. This is that which gives to the Bible some kind of mystical meaning. In other words, what is on the surface is not the meaning, but what is hidden becomes the meaning. This is very popular. Allegorizing means to say that the historical meaning is not the real meaning, and in fact may be nothing but a fabrication. The historical meaning is not the real meaning, the real meaning is the spiritual meaning hidden beneath the surface. "And once you say that something in the Bible is an allegory, that is, it is only a symbol of the reality, you have just made it impossible to know what that reality is because if that reality cannot be discerned through the normal understanding of language, how can it be discerned?" Kalos, very germane post. To distinguish between allegorical meaning and the unadorned plain sense of a piece of writing is not usually a particularly difficult task, especially if we proceed on the premise that the passage means nothing more than what it says unless it becomes clear that another. esoteric, meaning is the only possible way to read it so that it makes sense. But it is not always easy to separate fact from fiction; perils frequently lie in wait to trip us up and deceive us. For example, secular humanism calls the theory of evolution science; true science now calls it fiction. Is the creation account therefore fact or allegory? Some of the practices society calls alternate lifestyles the Bible calls perversions. Once again, is this mere allegory? Jesus rose from the dead? Fact, or allegory? It's perfectly clear, isn't it? We can indeed "allegorize" ourselves into believing the Bible says whatever we want it to say. We can "allegorize" ourselves all the way to hell. Or, is hell just an allegory? As for me, I don't want to go there to find out! --Hank | ||||||

Hank, I couldn't agree more! I tried to tell Paul, but he just wouldn't listen. Nolan |
