Bible Question:
Hi all, This is not a question about anything in the Bible particular, but it's something that confuses me (and lately that's not really hard to do). What is the difference between translation and transliteration? Thank you Cheri |
Bible Answer: Greetings Cheri! Allow me to use the Greek NT as an example to answer your question. Translation is the process of putting the Greek word into it's English equivalent. For example, the Greek word for Law is 'nomos'. If I were to translate 'nomos' into English I would use the English word 'law'. Transliteration is the process of using English letters to spell a Greek word. For example, we cannot use Greek letters on this web site. So, earlier in the post I said that the Greek word for 'law' is 'nomos'. 'Nomos' is the transliterated Greek word, since I can't actually type the Greek word itself. I hope this helps!
