Bible Question:
Shalom Ed; Welcome to the forum, actually I am new to this site but have found it very interesting and helpful. I respect your view of scripture but do disagree. If you believe that you do not need any other source to understand the words of the Bible, could you please answer the following questions using the Bible only, without the aid of any other book or reference material. Matthew 18:6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea. What is a millstone and what does it have to do with being drowned? Leviticus 16:8 He is to cast lots for the two goats-- one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat. What are lots? NAS John 10:22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; What is the feast of Dedication? Matthew 23:5 "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; What are phylacteries? Matthew 2:23 and came and resided in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." Which prophet said this? Mark 9:3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. What is a fuller? |
Bible Answer: Shalom Yikes I sure stepped in to something when I said what I said. That will learn me! Your right to get a complete understanding of some of the objects, customs, traditions and places mentioned in the Bible we must refer to outside sources. I was incorrect when so general a statement that I included those. What I was saying God's truths are not hidden behind some obscure, social custom, tradition, object, or place that with out an outside source the jest of what God was saying. Your example Matt 18:6 I don’t have to understand a milestone was a Roman mile marker approximately 6 foot long to know I don’t want to go swimming with a rock around my neck. The other examples Lev 16:8 I would know since as a child we called throwing dice or drawing straws lots. The others Matt 23:5, Matt 2;23, Mark 9:3 and John 10:22 the knowledge of these would have little effect on my understanding. However phylacteries were little boxes worn on the forehead or upper arm that contained scripture. Matt 2:23 He shall be called a Nazarene." I believe that was an angel that said that in judges 13:5 unless you want Is53 to fit. Mark 9:3 a fuller would be a launderer since I always use a NASB Bible. ;-) John 10:22 I would know to be a Jewish feast day and one that God didn’t ordain and through the process of elimination I might guess it to be a dedication of something big and the only thing that big to a Jew was the temple. That would raise the question was this at the time of Solomon. Probably not since it isn’t mentioned else so that would only leave two other times on the return from Babylon and after the Maccabee rebellion. I’m being a wise guy and I’m sorry. Truthfully what I meant was God made the things we would accept as truths, ordinances, doctrine, precepts, principals, commandments, statues, and ways clear enough to stand on their own. I do not need an outside source to understand that in this particular case Jesus was shutting down this man’s excuse for not following Him. EdB |
