Bible Question:
Why is it that most religions agree that we are supposed to follow the new testament and to forget about the old, but then I hear the very same people from time to time quoting the same old testament. so do we follow the old and add the new? or do we forget completely about the old. |
Bible Answer: We do not forget completely about the old. Remember Hebrews 13:8, Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever! God did not change because of instituting a new covenant! Jesus said in Mt 5:17 that He came not to abolish the law or the prophets, but that He came to fulfill them. Galatians 3:24 says "Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith." So you see, Christ fulfilled the Law as we know it in the Old Testament so that we could be led into grace. The Lord knew mankind could never fulfill the Law anyway because of the sin nature we have all inherited. Now we have grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;not as a result of works, so thatno one may boast." We should as born again Christians endeavor to do all contained in the commandments, but recognize that we cannot meet that standard and even if we could, it would not justify nor save us. Jesus gave us new marching orders! First, to love God with all our heart, soul and mind, secondly; to love our neighbor as ourselves, "for in these all the commandments are fulfilled". The old testament is important, but today it is the new covenant that Christ has brought to us. I am saved by grace and by partnering with that and you are too if you say yes to Christ! Bless you! |
