Bible Note: Greetings Angel! You wrote: "Yet, we know that though the book of Revelation is complete as far as the offering of written revelations, we still need the Holy Spirit to do the actual interpretation and further refinement of the revealed matter... so the Bible in itself is not complete! It is not lacking further revelations (new information/prophecies)... so in that sence it is perfected; yet, the written revelations cannot be resolved by man except through the Divine assistance of the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21)" I have seen 2 Peter 1:20-21 used in this manner several times on the forum over the last few weeks. However, it is a misuse of the passage. 2 Pet. 1:20-21 does not refer to 'interpreting' Scripture. It refers to the 'origin' of Scripture. Peter is saying that no Scripture came about by private 'interpretation'. He is not saying that Scripture cannot be interpreted privately. :-) Scripture is written in language. Language has meaning. Therefore, Scripture can certainly be understood by simply 'reading' the text and applying the rules of grammar. Now, someone who is not a Christian will not be able to apply it to his life without the aid of the Holy Spirit. But, someone who is a not a Christian can certainly undertand the statements of Scritpure. He just won't be able to accept them. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
