NASB | James 2:14 ¶ What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | James 2:14 ¶ What is the benefit, my fellow believers, if someone claims to have faith but has no [good] works [as evidence]? Can that [kind of] faith save him? [No, a mere claim of faith is not sufficient--genuine faith produces good works.] |
Subject: Is salvation by faith only scriptural? |
Bible Note: The "filty rags" that, in God's sight, are the do-gooders' righteousness [Isa.64:6] should be convincing enough to a rational mind that works don't save. Yet there are legions who feel that they simply must do something to earn their salvation; apparently, grace is not viewed as sufficient for them. They prize their own works, viewing them as salvific. This shows a limping faith to be sure, but perhaps not so weak a faith as a strong dose of egotism. --Hank |
