Many people feel more obligated toward those that 'brought them to the Lord' or those that 'mentored' them than they do toward the Lord Himself. Legalism feels good to the self-righteous and the insecure both. To the self-righteous because it bolsters their 'understanding,' and to the insecure because a rigid system gives them emotional comfort.
