Subject: Joe, who is ya, man? |
Bible Note: Greetings Joe! This is one of those passages where the translation can be a little misleading (in my opinion). Eph. 4:20-24 is one sentence. Here is a rough (i.e. - very literal) translation with verb parsing: "20 But you did not learn (Aorist, Active, Indicative, 2nd, Plural) in the same way, 21 if indeed (or since) you heard (A, A, I, 2, P) Him and were taught (A, Passive, I, 2, P) by Him, because truth is in Jesus, 22 to throw off (Aorist, Middle, Infinitive) your old man, which is being corrupted (Present, Passive, Participle, Masculine, Accusative, Singular) by the lusts of deception, 23 and to be renewed (Present, Passive, Infinitive) in the spirit of your mind and to put on (Aorist, Middle, Infinitive) the new man, which, with reference to God, was created (Aorist, Passive Participle, Masculine, Accusative, Singular) in (the) righteousness and holiness of truth. Thus, the series of infinitives (to throw off, to put on, and to be renewed) all seem to describe the content of the teaching they received. The infinitives do function as imperatives in these verses. They are also very instructive about the process of salvation. 1) Throw off: The aorist middle infinitive indicates that this is a one time action done by the one to whom the command is given. The results of that action benefit that person. 2) Be renewed: The present passive infinitive indicates that this is an ongoing process done to the person by someone else. 3) Put on: Again, the Aorist Middle indicates action taken once for one's own benefit. I haven't read all of your discussion with Bill, so I can't say that this impacts that discussion in any way. I just happened to read your view of this passage and thought I might ask you about it. It is one of my favorites! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
